“…Less invasive collection methods as nondestructive means of evaluating exposure to Cd were also found in our results, being feathers (22%) and eggshells (3%). The use of eggshells as trace element bioindicators has been widely reported (Dauwe et al 1999;Van Der Schyff 2016;Atamaleki et al 2020;Yang et al 2020). The same can be observed for feathers (Burger et al 1992;Veerle et al 2004;Ebert et al 2020).…”

“…Zinc (Zn): this metal has been measured in 13 species from the same number of countries. The lowest Zn levels (0.29 μg g -1 ) have been found in L. saundersi eggshells from China (Yang et al 2020). On the other hand, the highest Zn contents were found in L. michahellis eggshells (427 μg g -1 ) from Turkey (Durmaz et al 2016), followed by Spain L. cachinnans feces (305.1 μg g -1 ) and Portugal L. michahellis feathers (260.1 μg g -1 ).…”

“…The annual average precipitation is 530-630 mm, and the annual average temperature is 11.7-12.6 • C in the study area, which belongs to the temperate semi-humid continental monsoon climate [23]. The coastal tidal flats in the YRD are the key wintering habitat and breeding ground for migratory birds from East Asia to Australia, which is of strategic significance for global biodiversity conservation and ecological security maintenance in the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea [24]. With the intensification of human activities such as petroleum development, port construction, and agricultural development, the coastal tidal flats of the YRD were under increasing environmental pressure.…”
