Cadmium (Cd) is one of the most toxic elements of global concern in the environment with no biological value well known to science. Cadmium natural emissions, such as volcanic eruptions and natural fires, do not seem to release harmful concentrations of Cd in the environment, contrary to anthropogenic emissions (smelt, burning fossil fuels, phosphate fertilizer, nickel-cadmium batteries, plastic industry, etc). This review reports how waterbirds are used as sentinels of Cd concentrations on the Brazilian coast. We analyzed the standardization in methods and essential parameters to understand the levels and effects of Cd in this group of birds. Eighteen studies were carried out in the Brazilian territory, from 2007 to 2021, with a decline in publications in recent years. Cadmium concentrations were analyzed for 15 bird species, distributed in nine families and five orders. About 54% of the analyzed studies collected their samples in the territory of Rio de Janeiro state. Of the 17 Brazilian coastal states, Cd in waterbirds was only determined in eight states with the liver tissue being analyzed in 35% of the cases, followed by feathers (22%), kidney tissue (19%), muscles (13%), blood (8%), and eggshells (3%). In general, liver and kidney tissue concentrations were within the acceptable values for wild birds, 40 and 100 mg kg -1 respectively. Available data sets do not provide sufficient information to test any pattern of temporal and/or spatial trend in Cd concentrations in waterbirds. Besides, species of the same region do not necessarily concentrate the contaminants equally. Furthermore, the lack of standardization in methods and parameters compromises safe assessments of the conservation status of Brazilian waterbirds.

Anthropogenic activities and the demand for trace elements have risen, causing an increase in their environmental levels, which could affect biota. High levels of trace elements in living beings have been associated with toxicity, metabolic disorders, oxidative stress, and cancer. Seabirds, such as gulls, have been used as bioindicators of environmental pollution caused by anthropogenic sources. Gulls are widely distributed worldwide, usually occupying high trophic levels, and living close to humans. Among gulls, Larus spp. are omnivorous, predominantly carnivorous, nest on the ground, and capture live food or steal it opportunistically. The present work summarizes the data of trace elements found in eggs, feathers, blood, and feces, among other internal tissues, of several gull species of the genus Larus around the world. Most of the reports are from the Northern Hemisphere (70%), particularly from Europe and North America. The elements Cd, Hg, Mn, Pb, and Se are the most studied (54%), among which Hg represents about 19%. On the other hand, there is no information for lesser-known trace elements such as Rb, Ti, new technology elements (e.g. Ge, Re, Ta), rare earth elements (e.g. Ce, La, Y), or elements of the platinum group (e.g. Os, Ir, Ru). Even though Larus spp. is a suitable bioindicator of chemical contamination in marine ecosystems, only 28 of the 53 species of the Larus genus have been used on trace elements pollution. Future research should address lesser-known elements which are increasingly used by new technologies.

In order to understand the spatial distribution, ecological risks, and pollution status of nutrients and heavy metals in the coastal tidal creek water of the Yellow River Delta (YRD), a total of 21 water samples were collected from 7 sample sites. The results indicated that along the coastline from northwest to southeast in the YRD, the concentrations of TN, TP, and NH4+-N in the water decreased and then increased; the Cu concentration increased, decreased, and then increased; and the Pb concentration decreased. The average TN/TP mass ratio indicated that the tidal creek water belonged to a potential phosphorus-restricted eutrophication state. The RI result indicated that Cu and Pb in the water were at low ecological risk, while the SSD and RQ results indicated that Cu in the water was at a high ecological risk level and had potential harm to aquatic organisms. Based on the single-factor method, the water quality of the tidal creek inside and outside the Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve belonged to Grade IV. Cu should be controlled to improve the water quality and reduce the ecological risk, especially in the Yellow River Delta Nature Reserve.
