Impact of Helicobacter Pylori Infection on Gastric and Plasma Ghrelin Dynamics in Humans

Abstract: H. pylori infection has a negative impact on gastric and plasma ghrelin dynamics. Chronic inflammatory and atrophic changes associated with the infection may affect gastric ghrelin biosynthesis and contribute to the low circulating levels.

“…For example, Tatsuguchi et al reported that the number of gastric ghrelin-positive cells increased in adult patients after H. pylori eradication, but they neither monitored circulating ghrelin levels nor assessed changes in BMI after H. pylori eradication (26). Another study showed that circulating ghrelin levels tended to be increased in adult patients, who eradicated the organism, but the differences and changes of BMI were insignificant at 4 weeks after cessation of treatment (29). In contrast, our findings show that H. pylori eradication is not accompanied by an increase in circulating ghrelin.…”

“…There are contradictory reports on the influence of H. pylori eradication on ghrelin concentrations (25,26,29,48,49). In most studies, the follow-up was too short to see any change in BMI.…”

“…The influence of H pylori infection on gastric ghrelin level requires discussion. Most studies show that H pylori infection leads to decreased ghrelin secretion [25][26][27] . However, other reports suggest that serum ghrelin levels are similar in infected and non-infected patients [25] .…”

“…We have also previously learnt that infection with Helicobacter pylori and the chronic mucosal inflammation it causes, compromises the function of ghrelin-producing cells in the stomach. 14,15 Increasing severity of Helicobacter-gastritis correlates with lower plasma ghrelin levels. This was interpreted as an impaired ghrelin secretion due to the inflammatory response to H. pylori with secondary effects on metabolism.…”
