Impact of Hydrogen Injection on Natural Gas Measurement

Abstract: Hydrogen is increasingly receiving a primary role as an energy vector in ensuring the achievement of the European decarbonization goals by 2050. In fact, Hydrogen could be produced also by electrolysis of water using renewable sources, such as photovoltaic and wind power, being able to perform the energy storage function, as well as through injection into natural gas infrastructures. However, hydrogen injection directly impacts thermodynamic properties of the gas itself, such as density, calorific value, Wobbe… Show more

“…Hydrogen injection will also reduce the associated greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the gas end-use [37]. On the other hand, challenges regarding the upper H 2 blending limits for certain end-uses [38], safety and practical issues (hydrogen embrittlement, leakage and gas measurements) [37,39], cost considerations as well as lack of a catholic national and international regulatory framework are issues that need to be resolved before the large-scale implementation of this option.…”

“…The technical specifications of the components of the PtH2 integrated energy system are summarized in Table 1. The maximum allowed hydrogen content in the blend (𝛿 𝑚𝑎𝑥 ) was set to 10% by volume, being this limit generally agreed in the scientific literature [6].…”

“…The distribution and number of mixer arrangements were optimized based on the results of the study. Dell'Isola et al 25 injected hydrogen into natural gas and analyzed the effect of hydrogen injection on the flow rate, relative density, specific heat, and speed of sound of the gas. Li et al 26 investigated the physical properties of hydrogen mixed with natural gas.…”
