Impact of hypoalbuminemia on the prognosis of relapsed/refractory B‐cell lymphoma treated with axicabtagene ciloleucel

Abstract: Introduction Hypoalbuminemia is a known adverse prognostic factor in lymphomas. Yet, it is unknown if axicabtagene ciloleucel (axi‐cel) overcomes the adverse prognostic impact of hypoalbuminemia in relapsed/refractory large B‐cell lymphoma. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis across three Mayo Clinic centers to assess the relationship of hypoalbuminemia (defined as a serum albumin (SA) levels ≤ 3.5 g/dL) on outcomes of patients treated with axi‐cel. Results This analysis included 81 patients. Two pat… Show more

“…In the present study, albumin was not an independent risk factor for CSS. Hypoalbuminemia was previously proven to be strongly associated with cancer patients’ worsened OS and PFS, but the clinical practice of the single factor was limited because it could be easily affected by liver function, fluid volume and systemic inflammation [ 21 23 ]. This might be the reason for the results in our study.…”

“…Hypoalbuminemia is a common complication of many diseases, such as various types of malignant tumors and chronic inflammatory disease. Albumin level can also be used as one of the effective prognostic predictors of various tumor and nontumor diseases [37][38][39][40][41]. Low serum albumin level is related to the poor prognosis of tumor diseases, and the specific mechanism is unclear.…”

“…For the whole group, the level of hemoglobin, which represented the basic physical condition, was also an independent risk factor for OS and CSS, but albumin failed. Hypoalbuminemia was previously proved to be strongly associated with cancer patients' worsened OS and PFS, but the clinical practice of the single factor was limited because it could be easily affected by liver function, uid volume and systemic in ammatory [21][22][23] . It might be the reason of the above phenomenon.…”
