“…For the visually impaired, the underlying causes of suicidal behaviour may also be complex and multifactorial. Presence of visual impairment leads to impaired quality of life (Subhi et al, 2014; Tseng et al, 2018), loss of independency and social status (Besagar et al, 2022; Borgersen et al, 2021; Kherani et al, 2022; Subhi et al, 2014), lower personal income (Besagar et al, 2022; Kessel et al, 2022) and by itself associated to a relatively high prevalence of depression (Frank et al, 2019; Parravano et al, 2021). Another interesting aspect is that melatonin receptors increase under light conditions and decrease under dark conditions unlike melatonin levels which spike under dark conditions (Martínez‐Águila et al, 2021).…”

“…A nationwide survey in the United States of America showed that blindness ranked first in the fear of losing independency and ranked first in the worst possible health condition (Scott et al, 2016). Indeed, when patients with visual impairment are systematically evaluated, reports find extremely worrying degree of impaired quality of life (Subhi et al, 2014; Tseng et al, 2018), loss of independency and social status (Besagar et al, 2022; Borgersen et al, 2021; Kherani et al, 2022; Subhi et al, 2014), lower personal income (Besagar et al, 2022; Kessel et al, 2022) and high prevalence of depression (Frank et al, 2019; Parravano et al, 2021). Coincidentally, risk factors of suicide behaviour are very similar; low quality of life, loss of independency and social status, lower personal income and depression (Center for Disease Control, 2022).…”
