The effects of intercropping wheat, Triticum aestivum L., with mung bean, Vigna radiate L., on the populations of English grain aphid, Sitobion avenae (F.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae), and its natural enemies were evaluated by field and laboratory experiments. The population densities of aphids and their natural enemies were evaluated in the intercropped field against different row ratio combinations of wheat-mung bean. Results showed that wheat-mung bean intercropping caused a drop in aphid densities, and the ratio 12 wheat: 4 mung bean brought about the largest drop (> 8%). In addition, the population densities of coccinellids (ladybirds) and parasitoids and the species diversity of all the natural enemies of aphid were higher in the intercropped field than in the field planted only with wheat. However, intercropping did not influence the community indices (evenness and index of dominance concentration) of the natural enemies. Y-tube olfactometer bioassays were carried out in the laboratory to test whether odor blends of host and nonhost plants affect the host selection of S. avenae. Bioassays indicated that both apterous and alate aphids significantly preferred host plant odor over odor blends of host and intercropped species. Hence, the olfactory-based host location of aphids in the field might be affected by intercropping. The intercropping experiment clearly showed that increased crop species diversity suppresses aphid population growth and preserves the population of natural enemies of aphids. Our results also provide support for the "resource concentration hypothesis" and the "enemies hypothesis".

Background:The thread caterpillar Agrotis ipsilon (Hufnagel) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is an insect pest that attacks the lettuce, Lactuca sativa and this is a serious problem faced by farmers in Niassa province due to the fact that at the end of the fourth larval stage it (insect) cuts saplings and compromising agricultural output. Usually the control of this pest has been done using synthetic insecticides, but these have environmental related implications. Thus the researches of eco-friendly forms of control have been studied. Methods:In this research, the lettuce intercropping with onion Allium cepa was carried out to control the insect pest A. ípsilon. The experiment took place at the Agricultural Research Institute of Mozambique-IIAM. Several trials, one in monoculture (only lettuce) and other intercropped with onion were performed. In the experiment different intercropping patterns were tested, namely: Surround (a continuous line of onion surrounding a lettuce line), alternating (a line of onion and another of lettuce) and two lines of lettuce and one of lettuce.Results: Based on tests conducted, the intercropping of lettuce with onion resulted in more plant not attacked after the test compared to the monocrop (only lettuce). In the same research we studied the best pattern to intercropping and it was found that the surrounding form (a continuous line of onion encircling a lettuce line), after the experiment, showed a higher average number of non-attacked lettuce plants. Conclusions:Surrounding was the best intercropping pattern because showed a higher average number of nonattacked lettuce plants. The current results indicate that the onion can be used as useful tool to control the caterpillar, A. ipsolon in lettuce.

Cultural control measures should play an important role in cereal aphid management on wheat and barley. Planting barley in fields adjacent to those of wheat and intercropping wheat with barley are cultural practices that might suppress the cosmopolitan cereal pest Sitobion avenae (F.). To evaluate the potential effects of these cultural measures on aphid outbreak risks, clones of S. avenae were collected from wheat and barley. Host-switch experiments for the collected clones were conducted in the laboratory to compare their life table parameters and other life history traits. Our results demonstrated that wheat clones of S. avenae had lower developmental times, higher fecundities, and higher growth rates compared with barley clones when tested on the plant of origin. When transferred to barley, the performance of wheat clones was decreased in terms of developmental times of nymphs and age at first reproduction of adults. Barley clones' performance was decreased in terms of reproductive time or lifespan of adult on wheat compared with that on barley. The age-specific survival rates of barley clones tended to be lower than wheat clones in the earlier part of their lives on wheat. The age-specific fecundity of barley clones on barley remained low and fluctuated significantly during their lifetime. Although quite a few significant correlations between developmental and reproductive traits were identified on both plants, no significantly negative correlations (i.e., trade-offs) for the traits were found between plants. The results suggested that barley clones could be generalized but wheat clones were more specialized to their host plant. The potential benefits of the abovementioned cultural measures were discussed.
