BackgroundCervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women under 45 years of age. To deal with the decrease of smear test coverage in the United Kingdom, a Twitter campaign called #SmearForSmear has been launched in 2015 for the European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. Its aim was to encourage women to take a selfie showing their lipstick going over the edge and post it on Twitter with a raising awareness message promoting cervical cancer screening. The estimated audience was 500 million people. Other public health campaigns have been launched on social media such as Movember to encourage participation and self-engagement. Their result was unsatisfactory as their aim had been diluted to become mainly a social buzz.ObjectiveThe objectives of this study were to identify the tweets delivering a raising awareness message promoting cervical cancer screening (sensitizing tweets) and to understand the characteristics of Twitter users posting about this campaign.MethodsWe conducted a 3-step content analysis of the English tweets tagged #SmearForSmear posted on Twitter for the 2015 European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week. Data were collected using the Twitter application programming interface. Their extraction was based on an analysis grid generated by 2 independent researchers using a thematic analysis, validated by a strong Cohen kappa coefficient. A total of 7 themes were coded for sensitizing tweets and 14 for Twitter users’ status. Verbatims were thematically and then statistically analyzed.ResultsA total of 3019 tweets were collected and 1881 were analyzed. Moreover, 69.96% of tweets had been posted by people living in the United Kingdom. A total of 57.36% of users were women, and sex was unknown in 35.99% of cases. In addition, 54.44% of the users had posted at least one selfie with smeared lipstick. Furthermore, 32.32% of tweets were sensitizing. Independent factors associated with posting sensitizing tweets were women who experienced an abnormal smear test (OR [odds ratio] 13.456, 95% CI 3.101-58.378, P<.001), female gender (OR 3.752, 95% CI 2.133-6.598, P<.001), and people who live in the United Kingdom (OR 2.097, 95% CI 1.447-3.038, P<.001). Nonsensitizing tweets were statistically more posted by a nonhealth or nonmedia company (OR 0.558, 95% CI 0.383-0.814, P<.001).ConclusionsThis study demonstrates that the success of a public health campaign using a social media platform depends on its ability to get its targets involved. It also suggests the need to use social marketing to help its dissemination. The clinical impact of this Twitter campaign to increase cervical cancer screening is yet to be evaluated.

Background: Estimated one million-plus women worldwide are currently living with cervical cancer. Many of them have not any access to health services for prevention, curative treatment or palliative care. Cervical cancer is a consequence of a long-term infection with human papillomavirus (HPV), and the majority of cervical cancer cases (>80%) are currently found in low-and middle-income countries. In fact, an increasing body of literature indicates that HIV-positive women have an increased risk of developing cervical cancer in comparison with their HIV-negative counterparts. Cervical cancer is most notable in the lower-resource countries of sub-Saharan Africa as the result of the highest incidence of HIV-infected women.Pilot mHealth projects have shown that, particularly in developing countries, mobiles phones improve communication and information-delivery and informationretrieval processes over vast distances between healthcare service providers and patients. Mobiles phones provide remote access to healthcare facilities, facilitate trainings for, and consultations among health workers, and allow for remote monitoring and surveillance to improve public health programs awareness. mHealth interventions can potentially influence health-related behavior (and, in turn, health outcomes) via effecting changes in mediators of behavior change such as knowledge, attitudes, community peer norms, beliefs and self-efficacy. SMS can be customized to fit the needs of specific individuals by delivering tailored messages that are more likely to catch the individual's attention and be perceived as personally relevant and interesting.This systematic review will investigate whether mHealth interventions could improve cancer screening uptake in risk women. Objectives:To assess the effectiveness of different mHeath (SMS, calls, letters and emails reminders) interventions to improving cervical cancer screening in risk women.

IntroductionThe elimination of cervical cancer will only be achievable through primary and secondary prevention. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of primary care enrolment on the prevention of advanced cervical cancer.MethodsUsing a population-based case–control study, all women (n=5548) above 18 years of age who were diagnosed with cervical cancer between January 2006 and December 2015 in Ontario, Canada were selected for the analysis. The controls were women (n=27 740) above 18 years of age and without a diagnosis of cervical cancer. Five controls were matched to each case by year of birth. Descriptive statistics were used to compare the patients and controls. Multiple imputations and logistic regression were used to estimate the correlation between enrolment with a primary care provider and diagnosis of cervical cancer.ResultsA total of 44% of advanced cervical cancer patients and 56% of controls had a screening test 10 years before the index date. The odds of having had a Pap test in the 3 and 10 years before were higher when patients were enrolled with a primary care provider (OR 3.5 and 5.1, p<0.001). The correlation between screening and advanced cervical cancer (stage II–IV) incidence was modified by primary care enrolment: if the patient was enrolled with a primary care provider and had at least one screen in the previous 10 years, the OR of developing advanced cervical cancer was 0.42 (95% CI 0.40 to 0.43); if the patient was not enrolled the OR was 0.78 (95% CI 0.72 to 0.84).DiscussionPrimary care enrolment is an effect modifier of cervical cancer screening on advanced cervical cancer incidence. Efforts should be made to increase the capacity of primary care providers to offer screening in order to eradicate cervical cancer.
