Impact of lead on seed germination, seedling growth, chemical composition, and forage quality of different varieties of Sorghum

Abstract: Due to heavy metal contamination, there are currently significant losses in agriculture and food security. Anthropogenic sources led to increased heavy metal contamination, which was becoming an attentive problem for agriculture and food safety. Among these metals, lead (Pb), which is toxic and affects crop production, has emerged as a standout due to its severe toxicity and relatively obscure mode of action. This study aims to compare the chemical composition and nutritional value of three tested sorghum culti… Show more

“…According to Siddiqui et al (2014), the inhibitory effect of HMs is more pronounced on seedling growth than on seed germination. Pb is not an essential element for plant growth (Peralta-Videa et al, Although species, such as Allium cepa, H. vulgare and Zea mays, can tolerate Pb via complexation and inactivation, others, such as Brassica napus, Phaseolus vulgaris, and three sorghum cultivars incur toxicity because Pb impairs certain metabolic pathways (Wierzbicka, 1999;Osman and Fadhlallah, 2023).…”

“…SHAP (Shapley Additive explanations) analysis is used for coffee berry disease analysis to gain interpretability and insights into the predictions made by machine learning models providing a quantitative measure of feature importance [37] is maintained by calculating each feature's contribution to the prediction of a specific instance. if the SHAP analysis shows that the size of the coffee berry is the most important feature, this means that the model is more likely to classify a berry as infected if it is larger than average.…”

“… 28 The germination of seeds, growth, and metabolic activities of plants are affected by the increased level of Pb, resulting in decreased crop yields. 29 Furthermore, due to HMs stress, there is a generation of OS in the plants which are responsible for the excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) [OH − , O 2 2− , H 2 O 2 ] that causes damage to the plants at the cellular level. 30 …”
