Transitioning towards a sustainable society is at the core of public planning in the EU through the European Green Deal (EGD). However, is the EGD a master plan for actual sustainable development in the EU? This work aims to answer this question through an analysis of the environmental sustainability within the EGD's plans through the method of critical discourse analysis, and discussing the results with previous efforts for sustainable development in the EU and in the UN. The results of the analysis identify fundamental flaws in the environmental sustainability of the EGD, which seems to repeat mistakes of previous efforts for sustainability planning in the EU. This work concludes that economic growth is the predominant focus in public planning and that the EGD needs a review of various environmental aspects to be considered the master plan for a transition towards a sustainable EU.

Concrete is highly used construction material with cement being its major ingredient. Also, the demand for good quality of concrete is increasing because of the fast-growing urbanization. But there are certain problems associated with the manufacturing of cement. One of the major problems being production of carbon dioxide causing pollution in environment, the manufacturing of cement is quite expensive and it also leads to the depletion of resources. In order to curtail the consumption of cement, it has become inevitable to replace cement by certain amount with substituent materials that are cheaper to produce in order to lower down the financial cost of concrete production by some extent. The review paper, elaborates many properties of concrete by the inclusion of Kota stone slurry after evaluating several research papers. The following paper discusses numerous properties of concrete including workability, compressive strength, split tensile strength, water absorption and modulus of elasticity. The paper demonstrates that when used appropriately, inclusion of Kota stone slurry in concrete had a positive impact on concrete by increasing the strength and durability.

Ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) is a new type of concrete with improved features such as high strength, long service life, ductility, and toughness. UHPC’s energy-intensive cement and quartz sand may make it unsustainable despite its engineering expertise. Thus, a UHPC that is energy efficient and environmentally benign should use less energy-intensive components and industrial wastes. This review consolidates and critically reviews the latest global research on coal bottom ash (CBA) as a fine aggregate replacement material and nano-calcium silicate hydrate (C–S–H) as concrete additives. Based on the critical evaluation, replacing aggregate with CBA up to 60% improves strength by 23%. Since high-quality natural sand is depleting and CBA output is increasing due to coal power plants, the concrete industry can use CBA as an aggregate. However, CBA as an aggregate substitute in UHPC has been scarcely reported. Besides, nanomaterial technologies like nano-C–S–H have also been proven to increase traditional concrete’s strength by 33%. But, their impact on UHPC has yet to be fully explored. Thus, to develop UHPC with a lower carbon footprint and comparable or better performance to market-available UHPC, further research on CBA as aggregate replacement in UHPC with nano-C–S–H as an additive on mechanical durability and microstructure is needed.
