Impact of management practices on Italian ryegrass seed quality

Abstract: Thousand-seed weight and total germination from the first production year and two seed harvests were measured in tetraploid Italian ryegrass (cv. Tetraflorum) to study variations in seed quality. Four-year field experiments were carried out (2002-2006) in western Serbia and Italian ryegrass was established with three row spacings (20, 40 and 60 cm), four seeding rates (5, 10, 15 and 20 kg ha-1) and using four spring nitrogen rates (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg ha-1). High seed quality was obtained, except for t… Show more

“…Variability of 1000 seed mass depending on the seed lot in the two years and two regions ranged from CV = 23.9 % in Serbia in 2014 to CV = 12.1 % in Belarus in 2015. For the seed from Belarus in 2014 and the seed from Serbia in 2015 similar variability was established (CV = 15.2 % and CV = 17.6 %).Seed quality of grasses for forage and decorative purposes is influenced by growing technologies and genetics (Simić et al, 2010;Veliijević et al, 2016). Significant impact on the quality of seeds is made by a post-harvest treatment and a method of seed storage (Stanisavljević et al 2012(Stanisavljević et al , 2014.…”

“…Tetraploid varieties are interesting because they give higher yield of green mass, but yields of seeds are lower in relation to diploid. It is noticed that tetraploid ryegrasses has larger seeds than the corresponding values recorded for diploid strains (Simić et al, 2010) In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there are no recognized domestic varieties of Italian ryegrass. The needs for the seed of this plant species are met by importing and own production of seeds of domesticated varieties of Italian ryegrass.…”

“…Неке травне врсте у повољним годинама могу дати и другу жетву сјемена, мада оно по квалитету не одговара стандардима (Симић и сар. 2007;Simić et al 2010). Актуелни проблеми везани за квалитет сјемена трава односе се на разбијање дормантности, питање утицаја влаге и квалитета сјемена (Stanisavljević et al 2010).…”
