“…However, with the ability to mine large databases electronically, more recent studies have validated the original practice of MBP combined with oral antibiotics, demonstrating a decrease in anastomotic leak and surgical‐site infection rates. The effect of bowel preparation on oncological outcome is largely unknown and there is conflicting evidence regarding the impact of MBP on the long‐term survival of patients with colorectal cancer. Among the many reasons for this conflicting evidence is that the scientific basis of the components of the MBP relative to overall efficacy has not been properly elucidated.…”

“…However, recent some studies from the United States databases have reported that combining MBP and oral antibiotics results in a significantly lower incidence of AL, incisional SSI and hospital readmission compared with no preoperative bowel preparation in colorectal surgery [6264] . Moreover, regarding the longterm effect of MBP, the 10year cancerspecific survival rate was recently reported to be significantly better in MBP group than in nonMBP group [65,66] . Further studies are required to elucidate the effect of MBP on AL.…”

“…More recent studies have added further variables to be considered in this debate. Long‐term results from a randomized control trial in Sweden indicate better survival rates in patients treated with MBP . Analysis of American National Surgical Quality Improvement Program data has shown reduced surgical site infections and anastomotic leak rates in patients treated with a combination of oral antibiotics and MBP .…”
