Background Receiving preoperative information is a right of all parents whose children are admitted for surgery. Information for parents can help to prepare children and lessen anxiety for both parent and child. Aim This study aims to assess the preoperative information needs of parents. Methods This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. A non-probability convenience sampling technique was used to select 100 parents whose children, aged between 0 and 18 years, were admitted for surgery. The Parents Desire for Information scale was used to collect the data, which were then analysed using descriptive statistics. Results The majority of the sample indicated that it is essential to receive preoperative information. The aspects of preoperative information rated as essential were as follows: need for the surgery; duration of hospitalisation; informed consent; fasting time; investigations; medications; physical preparations; dress code for the child; waiting time and place; parental involvement in the operating theatre/recovery/ward; pain management; post-operative care including eating, drinking, ambulation, wound care, discharge instructions and follow up. The majority (60%) of the parents said that they prefer to receive verbal instructions. The majority (63%) of the study participants said that it was the doctors who provided the information, and of these, 70% rated the information received as good. Conclusions The present study concludes that parents of children undergoing surgery welcome comprehensive preoperative information.

Background: The risk of developing chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) in youth is related to psychological factors, including preoperative anxiety, depression, patient/caregiver pain catastrophizing, and poor self-efficacy in managing pain. While interventions exist to address these factors, they are generally brief and educational in nature. The current paper details patient partner feedback on the development of a psychologist-delivered perioperative psychological program (PPP) designed to identify and target psychological risk factors for CPSP and improve self-efficacy in managing pain. Methods: Qualitative interviews were conducted with two patients and their caregivers to discuss their surgical and pain management experience and to advise on components of the PPP. Results: Reflexive thematic analysis of interviews generated the following themes, which were incorporated into the content and implementation of the PPP: caregiver involvement, psychological and physical strategies for pain management, biopsychosocial pain education, intervention structure, and supporting materials. Conclusions: The development of a novel psychologist-led PPP is a promising approach to mitigate mental health risks associated with pediatric CPSP and potentially boost postoperative outcomes and family wellbeing. Integrating patient partner feedback ensures that the PPP is relevant, acceptable, and aligned with the needs and preferences of the patients it is designed to serve.

Objective: To develop and validate an instrument for nursing consultation with pediatric patients in the preoperative period. Method: This is a methodological study, consisting of five steps: identification of nursing diagnoses, discussion and evaluation of diagnoses with nurses from the institution, instrument development, instrument content validation with experts through the Delphi Technique, and instrument restructuring. The Nursing Minimum Data Set, Wanda Horta’s human needs, and the NANDA-NOC-NIC connections were used as theoretical framework. Results: In its final version, the instrument includes an assessment of psychobiological, psychosocial, and psychospiritual human needs, 38 nursing diagnoses, 65 nursing interventions, 113 nursing activities, and 62 nursing outcomes. The instrument obtained a content validity index between 0.90 and 1.0 in the first round, and suggestions, validated in the second round, obtained agreement from 70 to 100%. Conclusion: The instrument developed can be a tool for use in nursing consultations in the preoperative period for children, providing greater assertiveness to nursing actions for this clientele.
