Impact of Music Therapy on Gait After Stroke

Abstract: Music therapy or music-supported therapy is a therapeutic modality sometimes used during the rehabilitation phase after an acute ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. The intervention suggests that the resulting audio-motor coupling can enhance motor function. Multiple clinical studies have reported various improvements-including cognitive, mood, and limb function. Gait impairment after stroke confers significant morbidity. The authors present a systematic review of randomized controlled trials that have examined th… Show more

“…Music therapy was given for six days a week for up to one month 21 . A systematic review conducted by Daniel et al, in 2021 also supports music therapy and its effectiveness on the gait after stroke 22 . A systematic review was conducted by Le Perf et al, to identify the effectiveness of music therapy and its types in the rehabilitation of stroke.…”

“…Passive music therapy means “listening to music,” the melody, rhythm, and other factors that act on the nervous system of the patient during listening to music. Active music therapy is the ability of a patient to imitate percussion rhythms or play musical instruments under the guidance of a music therapist ( Sihvonen et al, 2017 ; Grau-Sánchez et al, 2020 ; Daniel et al, 2021 ). The therapeutic effect promotes the recovery of limb motor function through continuous stimulation of the motor cortex within the brain ( Rojo et al, 2011 ; Grau-Sánchez et al, 2013 ; Ripollés et al, 2016 ).…”

“…Effective rehabilitation strategies can manipulate neuroplasticity to strengthen the motor function of the patients and improve their quality of life ( Dimyan and Cohen, 2011 ). Recently, various treatment methods, including sports, music, and mirror therapies, have gradually been introduced in the rehabilitation of motor function after stroke ( Daniel et al, 2021 ; Saavedra-García et al, 2021 ; Timmermans et al, 2021 ). More scientists are focusing on rehabilitating motor function after stroke and have published several articles regarding the same; however, the direction and hotspots of research in this field remain unclear.…”
