Aim: The objective is to examine the relationship between the musculoskeletal system (MSS)-based disability and the body mass index (BMI). Material and Method: The medical board reports (MBR) issued for patients in 2010, who applied for a disability report, were screened. From a total of 283 MBR's, 99 disability reports were included. BMI was calculated and the relationship between disability ratios and BMI was examined. Findings: Out of the 99 patients, 77 were male and 22 were female. The mean age was 46.7±17.8, the BMI was 25.5±5.7 kg/m², the total disability ratio (TDR) was 46±24% and the MSS disability ratio was 33±23%. Both the BMI and age of the patient were significantly correlated with TDR values (p<0.05). The female mean age, the TDR, MSS disability ratio and BMI were higher compared to males. However, only the TDR was statistically significantly higher (p<0.05). 46% of the disability reports were due to acquired diseases (most commonly caused by arthrosis), 37% injuries (most frequently falls, work accidents and firearm injuries) and 11% were for congenital diseases. It was determined that the most patients, had applied to The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the most affected region was the lower extremities. Conclusion: It was identified that the increase in BMI may have an increasing effect on the disability ratios as well as the positive effect of disability on BMI. This fact should be taken into consideration when the ratio of disability is calculated in health board reports.

 ABSTRACT: Objective: The objective of this article is to estimate the probabilities of transition between different degrees of functional dependence, as well as the predictive capacity of this dependence for general mortality of women and men living in Mexico aged 65 and over. Methods: By means of probabilities, transitions between different degrees of functional dependence are calculated and, with proportional Cox risks models, the relative risks of mortality are estimated. Results: The results indicate that women are more likely to move from mild functional dependence to moderate or severe functional dependence than men. Likewise, women and men with severe functional dependence, assessed at the baseline, have higher relative risks of mortality than the mortality risks of individuals without functional dependence. Conclusion: There are differences in the probabilities of transition to functional dependence, noting that women are more likely to move to higher degrees of physical restraint than men. In this sense, having physical limitations in the development of basic activities of daily living increases mortality risks among Mexican elderly.

This study examined predictors of physical performance, a key aspect of quality of life, in children with excess weight. Methods: Participants were 269 children aged 6-12 years with a body mass index above the 85th percentile. Children completed a standardized physical performance task capturing lower extremity strength, balance, and gait speed. Height, weight, and waist circumference were objectively measured, and daily moderate-vigorous physical activity (min/day) and sedentary time (% of day) were assessed with a 7-day accelerometer protocol.Results: Physical performance task completion averaged 15.0 (SD = 2.5) seconds. Children with higher body mass index z-scores and waist circumferences had significantly longer task completion times. The task took 1.8 additional seconds per 1.0 body mass index z-score (p < .001), and 1.2 additional seconds for every 20 cm higher waist circumference (p < .001). Daily moderatevigorous physical activity and sedentary time were unrelated to physical performance, and did not moderate its associations with the adiposity measures.Conclusion: Among children with excess weight, physical performance declines with increasing levels of total and central adiposity. Daily activity levels do not moderate this association. Interventions that directly target weight reduction would likely yield the greatest improvement in physical performance in children with overweight or obesity.
