Researchers are increasingly looking to plants as sources of novel ingredients active against vector-borne diseases. Medicinal plant extracts and their metabolites are an attractive source for such products. This study investigated the insecticidal activity of five essential oils extracted from the most common medicinal herbs in Jazan province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Extracted oils and nanoemulsions synthesized from those oils were characterized before application at different concentrations to laboratory-reared fourth-stage larvae of Culex pipens. Basil (Ocimum bascilicum) and cumin (Cuminum cyminum) essential oils showed moderate larvicidal effect with LC50 81.07 ug/mL and 96.29 ug/mL, respectively. That activity was improved in their nanoemulsion forms, as evidenced by a reduction in the LC50 to 65.19 ug/mL for basil and 64.50 ug/mL for cumin. Clove (Syzygium aromaticum), henna (Lawsonia inermis) and ginger (Zingiber officinalis) oils showed weaker insecticidal activity, with LC50 values of 394 ug/mL, 306 ug/mL, and 494 ug/mL, respectively. Moreover, the nanoemulsion forms of those essential oils did not show any improvement in their insecticidal activity. In conclusion, of the studied plants, the nanoemulsions of basil and cumin showed significant larvicidal activity.

Ocimum basilicum Linn, belonging to the Family Lamiaceae, is a species of great economic value, standing out for its medicinal use, being also used for the production of essential oils (EOs) and in the food industry. This study aimed to evaluate the chemical profile, total phenolics, antioxidant activity, toxicity and larvicidal activity of EO extracted from the leaves of O. basilicum L.The EO was extracted by hydrodistillation at 100 °C for 3h. The physicochemical parameters were determined and the chemical characterization obtained by Gas Chromatography coupled to Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The total phenolic content was quantified according to Folin-Ciocalteu methodology. Antioxidant quantification was performed using the ABTS and DPPH methods.The toxicity assay was performed using the lethality bioassay with Artemia salina Leach. For larvicidal activity, larvae of Aedes aegypti were submitted to different concentrations of EO solutions. Methyl chavicol and linalool were quantified as the major components in the EO obtained and biological properties were attributed to them.The EO was considered nontoxic by the criterion adopted. Total phenolic content totaled 440,121 mg EAT g-1. The best antioxidant results were obtained for the DPPH radical in IC50. The action of the was observed as larvicidal where the LC50 of 43.84 mg L-1 was determined, being efficient. The results obtained allowed to conclude that the EO studied presented efficient larvicidal activity against the larvae of Aedes aegypti, being important and encouraged its use and application.

Mosquitoes are considered as the most nuisance causing vectors as they are responsible for a widespread of diseases. Malaria-borne mosquitoes are responsible of killing two to three million people and infect an estimated two hundred million or more annually. A host of other mosquito-borne diseases including filariasis, yellow fever, dengue, and encephalitis kill and debilitate hundreds of millions more. The present study investigates the bio efficacy of two commercially available plant oils from Pongamia glabra (Karanja) and Syzygium aromaticum (Clove). These two plant oils were tested against Aedes aegypti (Dengue fever mosquito) to determine their lethal concentration doses (LC50). A larval toxicity assay was performed where a stock solution of 10% was prepared for both the oils at a concentration range of 100 to 900 ppm and 90 to 1300 ppm was set for Pongamia glabra and Syzygium aromaticum respectively. A batch of each 10 IV th instar larvae was subjected to the assay with test, combination and a control set for a period of 24 and 48 hrs. LC50 of two oils were determined while the combination of two oils showed a synergistic effect. The effect of P. glabra and S. aromaticum on the anterior and posterior regions of the midgut region of A. aegypti larvae were found damage to epithelial cells, basement membrane, peritrophic membrane, fat body cells and nuclei were observed. The results of the study showed that the synergistic method of using common eco-safe combination of plant oils were effective to handle and monitor A. aegypti larva. Pongamia glabra and Syzygium aromaticum are among the successful mosquito control agents.
