Impact of Operating Time on Selected Tribological Properties of the Friction Material in the Brake Pads of Passenger Cars

Abstract: Braking systems have a direct impact on the safety of road users. That is why it is crucial that the performance of brakes be dependable and faultless. Unfortunately, the operating conditions of brakes during their operating time are affected by many variables, which results in changes in their tribological properties. This article presents an attempt to develop a methodology for studying how the operating time affects the value of the coefficient of friction and the abrasive wear factor. The Taguchi method of… Show more

“…In addition, the proportions of these materials are not homogeneous across the entire section of the pad. Brake pads show a clear division (resulting, among other things, from production technology) into the friction layer, the interlayer (adhesive) and the back plate ( Figure 1 ) [ 19 ]. This structure causes the composition of the friction material to change as the brake pad runs out, which has a direct impact on the process of braking [ 20 , 21 ].…”

“…Most of the studies related to these tribological aspects of shoe brakes are with reference to automobiles, trains, and lifting machines [ 2 , 3 , 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Regarding the shoe brakes of overhead cranes, the temperature of the friction pair, the braking dynamics, and the control of the movement in the braking process have been studied by several authors [ 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ].…”

“…The drum of the brakes of overhead cranes is made from steel or cast iron and the brake lining of the shoe is made from composite materials [ 1 ]. The material, from which the brake drum is made, must have the following characteristics from a tribological point of view: high coefficient of friction; stable coefficient of friction between itself and the brake lining; wear resistance; good thermal conductivity [ 2 ].…”

“…As a result, Taguchi's experimental method provides a solid instrument for examining the impact of diverse process variables on brake wear when paired with ANOVA analysis [22][23][24][25][26][27][28][29]. The research aims to achieve optimal results in establishing minimum wear rates by analyzing the effect of various process variables, i.e., load, sliding distance, and sliding velocity, on copper-free semi-metallic friction material under dry sliding conditions.…”
