Impact of Ophthalmic Surgeon Experience on Early Postoperative Central Corneal Thickness After Cataract Surgery

Abstract: Greater surgical experience was found to be associated with reduced early postoperative corneal edema, shorter operative time, and shorter ultrasound time. This suggests that beyond mastering the initial learning curve of phacoemulsification, surgical experience enables faster and safer surgery.

“…Although phacoemulsification is a safe procedure, the risk of endothelial cell loss is inherent due to the intraocular maneuvers involved. [13][14][15][16][17][18] In this study, surgical outcomes in surgeries performed by a group of 10 ophthalmology residents at the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) over the course of 18 months of phacoemulsification training (July 2016 to January 2018) were compared. We retrospectively analyzed intraoperative complications, as well as pre-, intra-, and postoperative parameters, in order to compare outcomes among residents of different training levels.…”

“…Moreover, few studies have evaluated important related parameters such as pachymetric variation (14) or endothelial cell loss. (15) The present study assessed a consistently larger number of surgeries performed by the same group of residents and has also provided a comprehensive analysis of ocular parameters.…”

“…For example, an increased risk of postoperative complications is reported for surgeons who have performed less than 500 gastric bypass surgeries compared to surgeons who have performed more than 500 surgeries 1 . It has been reported that the risk of patients developing reactive corneal edema as determined by the central corneal thickness 2 hours after surgery was about 1.6 times higher for novice surgeons performing cataract surgery than surgeons with experience 2 . Thus, shortening the learning curve of a surgical technique is reported to be one of the most important challenges in medicine.…”
