Impact of Overt and Subclinical Hypothyroidism on Exercise Tolerance: A Systematic Review

Abstract: A limited body of knowledge exists concerning exercise tolerance in treated patients with hypothyroidism, and there is an insufficient amount of quantitative studies on the effects of a physical training program. To enhance exercise and sports participation for this specific group, more research in this forgotten area is warranted.

“…An impairment of physical performance likely affects quality of life and should be recognized. Although the previous studies examined this topic, little is known about symptoms and physical performance after restoration of euthyroidism [8]. To our knowledge, this pilot study is the first one reporting data of biochemical tests, disease-specific questionnaires, and physical testing both in S-Hypo and O-Hypo, at diagnosis and after restoration of euthyroidism.…”

“…Evidence supports the concept that long-term adverse effects of overt hypothyroidism may be expected also in subclinical hypothyroidism [5][6][7]. The actions of thyroid hormone on the heart, respiratory, and skeletal systems are likely involved in endurance and exercise capacity [6,8,9]. Among them, impaired left ventricular diastolic function, reduction of preload, and increased vascular resistance are the most consistent cardiac effects [10][11][12][13].…”
