Impact of PCB on resistance to Flavobacterium psychrophilum after experimental infection of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss eggs by nanoinjection

Abstract: The effects of sublethal exposure of a commercial blend of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), i.e. Clophen A50, on disease resistance to the aetiological agent of rainbow trout fry syndrome, Flavobacterium psychrophilum, were investigated. Newly fertilised rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss eggs were nanoinjected with 2 doses of Clophen A50 (0.4 or 2 µg egg -1 ) and/or 100 colony forming units of F. psychrophilum. The mean cumulative mortality in control groups, and groups exposed to the lower dose of Clophen A50… Show more

“…This increase was not observed in the group exposed to 700 g/kg BDE-47. Bi -phasic and hormetic dose-response curves are widely discussed in the toxicological literature [41,42] and well known for better studied PCB [43,44] , suggesting an involvement of heterogeneous mechanisms of response at different concentration thresholds in the majority of cases. These mechanisms remain to be investigated for low-dose PBDE toxicity.…”

“…Baseline corticosterone concentrations in American kestrels (Falco sparverius) exposed to commercial mixture of PCBs (Aroclors) exhibited a hormetic response in relation to total PCB liver burden [ 5 ]. In one assay [ 6 ] rainbow trout exposed to low dose (0.4 μg/egg) of another commercial PCB mixture (Clophen A50) through eggs nanoinjections showed decreased disease (trout fry syndrome) resistance while resistance of group exposed to high dose (2 μg/egg) was not significantly different from the control group. Perturbations in the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis were highly nonlinear with respect to PCB 126 dosing in study by Fisher et al [ 7 ].…”

“…Kumagai [66] recovered F. psychrophilum cells within salmonid eggs by experimentally immersing them in a F. psychrophilum suspension prior to water-hardening. Resistance to vertically-transmitted F. psychrophilum may also be influenced by the maternal transfer of contaminants such as PCBs [67].…”
