Impact of penetration of non-synchronous generators on power system dynamics

Abstract: Abstract-Due to the integration of Distributed EnergyResources (DERs), both non-synchronous generators and energy storage technologies, the dynamic behavior of power systems is changing. The extent of the impact is yet to be fully investigated and quantified. Proper models, suitable for large scale studies but also representing all the DER control and protection mechanisms that affect the dynamic behavior of individual components and the system as a whole are used in this study. The effect of DER location, pen… Show more

“…2 shows the histogram of the damping of the critical electromechanical mode obtained from 1000 MC simulations and corresponding, fitted pdf based on normal distribution to illustrate the effect of uncertainties on small disturbance stability. Finally, power system transient stability is most frequently analyzed using the transient stability index (TSI) given by (2) [30][31][32]…”

“…Equation 2measures the magnitude of oscillations of each generator's rotor angle after a period of time after the fault. The system is considered to settle to a new steady state if the index value is smaller than 5% [9].…”

“…More and more studies, e.g. [9], are investigating the impact of penetration of DERs on power system dynamics. This paper combines the two in a way and considers the uncertainties in DERs (Wind generation and PhotoVoltaics generation) and system loading, and assesses their influence on system transient stability.…”

“…The models used are available in DIgSILENT/PowerFactory [11] software and are suitable generic RMS models for large scale stability studies following a similar approach to [12]. More information on the modified test network and RES modelling can be found in [13]. All RES units are considered to provide Fault Ride Through (FRT) capability.…”
