Companies around the world use crowdsourcing platforms to complete simple tasks, collect product ideas, and launch advertising campaigns. Recently, crowdsourcing has also been used for software development to run tests, fix small defects, or perform small coding tasks. Among the pillars upholding the crowdsourcing business model are the platform participants, as they are responsible for accomplishing the requested tasks. Since successful crowdsourcing heavily relies on attracting and retaining participants, it is essential to understand how they behave. This exploratory study aims to understand a specific contributor profile: hyperspecialists. We analyzed developers' participation on challenges in two ways. First, we analyzed the type of challenge that 664 Topcoder platform developers participated in during the first 18 months of their participation. Second, we focused on the profile of users who had more collaborations in the development challenges. After quantitative analysis, we observed that, in general, users who do not stop participating have behavioral traits that indicate hyper-specialization, since they participate in the majority of the same types of challenge. An interesting, though troubling, finding was the high dropout rate on the platform: 66% of participants discontinued their participation during the study period. The results also showed that hyperspecialization can be observed in terms of technologies required in the development challenges. We found that 60% of the 2,086 developers analyzed participated in at least 75% of challenges that required the same technology. We found hyperspecialists and non-specialists significantly differ in behavior and characteristics, including hyperspecialists' lower winning rate when compared to non-specialists.

The increasing attention for open innovation processes within organizational development context is materialized through new product and/or services development. The main approach into this direction is to enhance the crowdsourcing features within internal innovation processes, especially value co–creation. The emerging industries, such as creative ones, are using this approach in order to innovate and to enhance collaborative power of creative co–producers. By shifting the co–creation from customers only to multiple stakeholders’ engagement there can be observed the actors’ evolution within the innovation ecosystems. Thus, in this paper there will be assessed the key features of crowdsourcing processes in terms of the most relevant transitions in value co–creation theory. The use of case study approach will reveal relevant insights from the Squadhelp competition platform in terms of innovation, crowdsourcing activities and creative co–producers.

Nowadays, software development failure has become a very serious problem. Inaccurate time estimation is one of the major causes of the software development failure. Inaccurate time estimation mostly creates time pressure that causes several negative impacts on software developers’ mental and physical health. The past studies had also believed that burnouts and job turnover problems happened due to time pressure. Therefore, the objective of this study is to explore time pressure with human behavior to see if they can make any relation. By this way, one can explore the hidden patterns between time pressure and human behavior in software engineering. In order to carry out the study, personality and time pressure studies are explored in general to see if past studies had ever made any space for software domain. Moreover, based on the limited selected studies, the literature review identifies that several authors had correlated the time pressure with personality. Unfortunately, time pressure and software developer personality are not specifically studied together in software engineering. For that reason, this study leaves some recommendations for researchers to contribute in the very topic to make software development better.
