BackgroundAcceptance of disability (AOD) is a process that a patient must undergo to cope with altered abilities, but its effect in Parkinson's disease (PD) remains unclear. The present study aimed to determine the level of AOD, examine the influence of sociodemographic variables and disease characteristics on the AOD level, and evaluate the relation between AOD level and quality of life in a cohort of PD patients from Southwest of China.MethodsA total of 336 PD patients were consecutively recruited from November 2018 to October 2020. At enrollment, demographic and clinical data were obtained using a questionnaire, and the Acceptance of Disability Scale-Revised (AODS-R) scale was used to measure the AOD level.ResultsThe mean total score of AOD is 87.28, indicating a moderate level of disability acceptance in PD patients. Statistical analysis showed that understanding of PD, family support, and UPDRS-II score were major factors affecting AOD level, and patients with low AOD levels were more likely to have poorer quality of life.ConclusionAOD is a serious problem in PD patients in Southwest China, especially among individuals with insufficient family support and a lack of recognition of the disease. AOD was also associated with motor function and daily living ability, thus suggesting that evaluation of the AOD and promotion of the awareness may be helpful to improve the quality of life in patients with PD.

Background: Stroke is one of the major public health problems worldwide. Physical and mental health data of stroke survivors are often expressed in proportions. Therefore, the Beta Regression models family for data between zero and one will be appropriate. Objectives: To identify a suitable model and the likely risk factors of physical and mental health of stroke survivors. Method: Secondary data of stroke survivors from two tertiary health Institutions in Ogun State, Nigeria, were analysed. Inflated Beta (BEINF) and Inflated-at-one-Beta (BEINF1) models were compared using Deviance (DEV), Akaike Information Criterion (AIC) and Bayesian Information Criteria (BIC) for model selection. The model with minimum DEV, AIC and BIC was considered to be better. Results: The deviance (-86.0604,), AIC (-46.0604) and BIC (6.4391) values of the BEINF1 model for physical health and the deviance (-20.1217), AIC (19.8783) and BIC (72.3778) values of BEINF1 model for mental health were smaller than BEINF models. Therefore, BEINF1 was the better model to identify the health risk factors of stroke survivors. Age, marital status, diastolic blood pressure, disability duration and systolic blood pressure had a significant association with physical health, while BMI had a significant positive association with mental health. Conclusion: The beta-inflated-at-one (BEINF1) model is suitable for identifying health risk factors of stroke survivors when the outcome variable is a proportion. Both demographic and clinical characteristics were significantly associated with the health of stroke survivors. This study would assist researchers in knowing the appropriate model for analysing proportion or percentage response variables.

Objetivo: el propósito del estudio fue conocer el grado de discapacidad y sus determinantes socioeconómicos, clínicos y de acceso a los servicios de salud y rehabilitación en personas con hemiplejía o hemiparesia en la ciudad de Popayán, Cauca. Metodología: estudio descriptivo, correlacional y transversal. Participaron 52 personas mayores de edad, con hemiplejia o hemiparesia. Se aplicó el cuestionario de evaluación de la discapacidad WHODAS 2.0.Resultados: El 100 % de las personas estudiadas tiene discapacidad, el promedio total de discapacidad fue de 44,7 %, correspondiente a discapacidad moderada. Los participantes mostraron dificultades en todos los dominios de funcionamiento, con dificultad moderada en los dominios cognición, cuidado personal, actividades cotidianas y dificultad severa para movilidad y participación. Conclusión: la hemiparesia y hemiplejia provocan discapacidad en diferentes grados de severidad, determinada por el estado patológico y la interacción e influencia de múltiples factores socioeconómicos, clínicos y de acceso a los servicios de salud y rehabilitación.
