This research focuses on two critical facets: the motivation driving manufacturers to engage in Design for Remanufacturing (DfR) and the decision-making process of the authorized remanufacturer regarding shared DfR responsibility. The study describes a scenario where the manufacturer produces new products and the authorised remanufacturer produces remanufactured products. The research employs three distinct models to analyse the complex dynamics between these two stakeholders. The findings indicate that: 1) the manufacturer's motivation for undertaking DfR responsibility is to optimise remanufacturing revenues by strategically increasing authorisation fees. 2) In scenarios where the unit remanufacturing cost-saving is limited, the authorized remanufacturer shares the DfR responsibility and selectively remanufactures a portion of used products. 3) Shared responsibility increases the remanufacturing ratio and profits for both stakeholders, effectively mitigating the free-rider dilemma. In addition, shared responsibility increases the authorisation fee without changing the proportion of DfR performance captured by the manufacturer.

Under the carbon tax policy, the vehicle remanufacturing has become popular, which threatens the new vehicle market. Facing the complicated competitive environment, the automobile manufacturer always adjusts product modular design to deal with the challenges from the internal and external remanufacturing. Currently, considering the impacts of the complicated market competitions and product modular design on the enterprise's operation management, how the carbon tax policy affects the vehicle remanufacturing is still uncertain. Thus, we construct a duopoly remanufacturing competition model consisting of an automobile manufacturer and remanufacturer with the aim of maximizing profit and determine the optimal product modular design, production, and remanufacturing decisions as well as profits. Then, we explore the impacts of the carbon tax on the vehicle remanufacturing supply chain from the perspectives of the economic, environment, and consumer surplus. The results show that the carbon tax is always disadvantageous to automobile manufacturer's profit but may benefit the automobile remanufacturer's profit. Contrary to the intuition, improving the carbon tax is not always conducive to the environment and harmful to the consumer.

Optimal decisions in a remanufacturing supply chain under money‐back guarantees

This study establishes a remanufacturing supply chain (RSC) consisting of a manufacturer and a retailer, in which the retailer offers a money‐back guarantee (MBG) with a full refund for consumers, and investigates the pricing decisions in four remanufacturing cases by considering the quality of returns. Our results show that controlling remanufacturing costs can enable both members to achieve a win–win situation in most remanufacturing cases. When the consumer's acceptance level for remanufactured products is low (high), a high return rate of non‐defective returns losses (benefits) the retailer's profit but does not losses the manufacturer's profit.
