Impact of selected pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress on carcinogenesis and progression of prostate and colorectal adenocarcinomas

Show more

“…Similar to other cancer diseases, oesophageal cancer (EC) is characterised by the presence of chronic oxidative stress, which triggers inflammation and results from intense metabolism due to continuous cell proliferation and mutations in mitochondrial DNA [ 166 ]. Oxidative stress not only leads to the occurrence of inflammatory reactions but also activates the transcription of genes for various inflammatory factors, depending on proteins from the nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) family [ 167 ].…”

“…However, mediators released by tumor-infiltrating cells are initially an important weapon in the fight against cancer, but their long-term action may have the opposite effect [54,55]. Among the main pro-inflammatory cytokines in the TME are interleukins (IL), e.g., IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 (CXCL-8) and tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) [56].…”

“…High concentrations of ROS in tumour cells may also induce cellular adaptation, increased rates of proliferation, DNA mutations and genome instability, as well as the development of resistance to certain groups of drugs used in cancer therapy, which further stimulates tumour growth [ 48 ]. Similarly to other cancers, EC entails chronic oxidative stress ( Table 1 ), primarily due to the development of inflammation and the activity of cytokines, as well as oncogenic signalling, intensive metabolism due to continuous proliferation, mutations in the mitochondrial DNA, and dysfunctions of the respiratory chain [ 49 ].…”
