Impact of socioeconomic status on survival in patients with ovarian cancer

Abstract: ObjectiveSocioeconomic status may impact survival in cancer patients. This study assessed whether low socioeconomic status has an impact on survival in patients with ovarian cancer and investigated whether differences in survival may be explained by type of therapy received.MethodsThe study population comprised 318 patients with ovarian cancer diagnosed between 2011 and 2015 in the François Baclesse regional cancer care center in Caen, North-West France. Socioeconomic status was assessed by using the European … Show more

“…Of the 4 studies that assessed ovarian cancer, studies from France and the US found that the observed gap in overall survival was partly explained by variations in stage at diagnosis and the treatment received. 42 , 45 A Danish study reported differential stage at diagnosis, tumor histological type, co-morbidities and health-related lifestyle behaviors as some of the explanatory factors. 23 In contrast, a study from Norway found that stage of ovarian cancer or smoking status prior to diagnosis did not contribute to overall survival gap between education groups.…”

“…The potential impact of SES on cancer survival has been investigated for different tumor types in several countries, and community poverty levels have repeatedly been associated with cancer mortality [15] . Higher SES was associated with greater likelihood of surgical resection and improved survival in patients with ovarian cancer [16] . In Finland, the incidence of colon cancer in men with elementary education attainment has a steep increase [17] .…”

“…Some studies use individual indices to measure the level of deprivation, such as level of income 4,[15][16][17] or education, [18][19][20] while others use an aggregate indicator generally based on the geographic area of residence. [21][22][23][24][25][26][27][28] A recent comprehensive French study estimated NS for all cancer sites according to the patients' socioeconomic environment, based on the "European deprivation index" (EDI). 29 This was the first study carried out on all cancer localizations, and using national data from all French cancer registries, covering a large population throughout France.…”
