Impact of sonolytic ozonation (O3/US) on degradation of pesticide residues in fresh vegetables and fruits: Case study of Faisalabad, Pakistan

Abstract: Highlights Pesticide residues become part of our diet, having a lot of negative impacts on human health, but farmers are unaware. It is difficult to completely remove the use of pesticides from the F&V supply chain, there was need of a strategy which could be used at household level. Sonolytic ozonation (O 3 /US) is an innovative technique, never tested for its potential in removal of pesticides using a household machine.… Show more

“…The oxidation property of ozone potentially works in an aqueous media more efficiently than in a gaseous state, which makes its function more suitable in combination with ultrasound (Aguayo et al, 2014; Fraiese et al, 2018). When both technologies applied in water media, helped each other to speed up sanitizing process efficiently and each increment in time application also enhance their combined decontamination property (Siddique, Malik, Asi, Inam‐ur‐Raheem, Iqbal, & Abdullah, 2021; Siddique, Malik, Asi, Anwar, & Inam‐ur‐Raheem, 2021) (Figure 2).…”

“…The concentration of ozone is very important for the removal of pesticide residues in vegetables (Siddique et al, 2021). Therefore, the removal of pesticides in pak choi by different concentrations of ozone (0.5, 1.5, and 2.5 mg/L) was studied (Figure 3b).…”

“…Sono-ozonation has also been explored by Siddique et al for the degradation of pesticides present in fresh fruit and vegetables [13] . Although the study concentrates on a local market in Pakistan, methods and conclusions can be of general application, and hence benefit.…”
