Impact of Swift Heavy Ions and Gamma Radiation upon Optical, Structural, and Chemical Properties of Polypropylene Polymer Films

Abstract: ABSTRACT:The present work focuses on the effects of two different ions (70 MeV carbon and 50 MeV lithium) and gamma radiation upon the structural, optical, and chemical properties of 125-μm thick polypropylene (PP) polymer films. The different samples of PP were irradiated with ions to the fluences in the range 10 11 -10 13 ions/cm 2 and exposed to gamma radiation of doses in the range 100-1250 kGy. A comparative study is carried out upon different parameters of irradiated polymer samples such as crystallite s… Show more

“…Its main effect is the creation of possible cross-link improving the recovering of polymers; scission producing low molecular masses able to be used as raw materials or inducers, or chain branching including advanced polymerization to design more environmental friendly materials that can increase, decrease, or consolidate the original polymer's structure [23,33,[48][49][50][51]. In a specific study, Faldini et al [52] examined the irradiation of crumb rubber samples at several levels of absorbed radiation doses (100-1000 kGy).…”

“…Previously, we have reported the use of γ-ray radiations and click chemistry in an attempt to achieve the homogeneous dispersion of graphite within the polymer matrix. 26,27 SHI irradiation is used as an effective way to tailor the structural and physiochemical properties of materials such as metals, 28 semiconductors, polymers, 29 etc., to enhance their applicability toward high-end applications. SHI have also been used to change the structure and morphology of carbon nanomaterials in a controllable manner.…”
