Impact of the Invasive Brown Marmorated Stink Bug in North America and Europe: History, Biology, Ecology, and Management

Abstract: The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB), Halyomorpha halys (Stål), is an invasive pentatomid introduced from Asia into the United States, Canada, multiple European countries, and Chile. In 2010, BMSB populations in the mid-Atlantic United States reached outbreak levels and subsequent feeding severely damaged tree fruit as well as other crops. Significant nuisance issues from adults overwintering inside homes were common. BMSB is a highly polyphagous species with a strong dispersal capacity and high reproductive … Show more

“…The brown marmorated stink bug, Halyomorpha halys Stal 1855 (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), native to Asia, is an invasive species in both North America and Europe (Haye, Gariepy, et al, ; Leskey & Nielsen, ) and was recently detected in South America (Faúndez & Rider, ). Halyomorpha halys has a wide range of hosts including agricultural and ornamental plants, as well as wild hosts (Rice et al ; Bergmann, Venugopal, Martinson, Raupp, & Shrewsbury, ).…”

“…The brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) (Halyomorpha halys Stål) (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) is an invasive alien species originating from East Asia that is now established in North America and Europe (Leskey & Nielsen 2018), recently found in Chile (Faúndez & Rider 2017), and threatening to establish in Australia and New Zealand (Haye et al 2015). It is a serious pest of many agricultural and horticultural crops, as well as a significant nuisance pest, throughout its distribution and a significant biosecurity risk to New Zealand's plant systems (Anon.…”

“…The New Zealand BMSB risk analysis by Duthie (2012) did not mention kiwifruit and a major English language review of BMSB from Asian literature (Lee et al 2013) listed only two references to kiwifruit and then in the context of kiwifruit being a host of BMSB and not necessarily as a pest. Kiwifruit was not mentioned in other recent major BMSB reviews (Rice et al 2014;Leskey & Nielsen 2018). The pest risk status of BMSB was rated as unknown on the StopBMSB website (Anon 2015).…”

“…Females are believed to be reproductively immature in early-spring, resulting in a delay in reproduction [18], hence the first appearance of nymphs in Trentino followed in summer. The decrease of adult observations during summer is probably due to their dispersion onto host plants within the forest edge for early-season feeding and perhaps oviposition [13]. Sightings of fall-adults peaked in the period of September to November; this can be related to a seasonal population increase [44], with spring-and summer-adults mating and laying eggs that in turn develop into mature stages.…”
