This study aimed to identify individuals' perception of their quality of life after placement of dental implants. It is a qualitative survey carried out with 14 patients. A semi-structured guide with six questions based on the domains of the Oral Health Impact Profile (OHIP-14) was used. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed according to the content analysis method. From the data analysis, four categories emerged. In the first category, named "Functional Limitation", the respondents mainly reported difficulty chewing and pronouncing words. For the second category, "Physical Pain", they frequently reported spontaneous pains or when chewing. The third category is related to "Psychological and Social Discomfort" with reports of moments of embarrassment, anxiety, despair and shame. In the last category, "Relation of Implants with the Quality of Life", the interviewees mentioned improved chewing ability, relief of discomfort and pain, and improvement in aesthetics and self-esteem. The findings of the present study demonstrate the importance of understanding the subjective aspects relating to missing teeth and oral rehabilitation and the perception that an individual has of how much these aspects impact on their quality of life and well-being.

Background: Implant-retained mandibular overdentures (IODs) represent an effective and reliable treatment modality for edentulous patients. The present retrospective study compared the clinical outcomes of IODs using bar attachment (BA) system with those using magnetic attachment (MA) system after functioning for up to 5 years. Methods: Human subjects treated with IODs between 01-01-2010 and 12-31-2014 were identified from patient records. Of the 54 subjects who met the inclusion criteria, 48 subjects including 26 treated with BA-IODs and 22 with MA-IODs (96 mandibular implants) were recruited for the study. The implant units and prostheses were evaluated individually for peri-implant health. Prosthetic complications and maintenance during follow-up were recorded. The subjects responded to the visual analog scale (VAS) and the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaires for evaluation of patient satisfaction and oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL).Results: The survival rates of the implants and prostheses were 96.9% and 95.8%, respectively, over a mean observation period of 48±11.3 (range, 13-64) months. Peri-implant probing depth (PPD) and plaque index (PI) were significantly better for the MA group compared with the BA group (P<0.05), while marginal bone loss (MBL) and sulcus bleeding index (SBI) showed no significant differences (P>0.05). Prosthetic complications and maintenance were attachment-dependent. Most recruited subjects were satisfied with their prostheses. There was no statistically significant difference regarding general patient satisfaction or OHRQoL between the two groups (P>0.05). Nevertheless, patients complained that the BA-IODs were significantly more difficult to clean than the MA-IODs (P<0.05). Conclusions:IODs have an ideal medium-term outcome irrespective of the attachment design. It is recommended that oral hygiene instructions and regular clinical examination be given to subjects wearing IODs.

Aim: To assess the aesthetic satisfaction with the metal-ceramic dental prosthesis in relation to patient education, age and gender. Methods: This prospective longitudinal study was undertaken by selecting 360 adult patients from both genders indicated for single maxillary porcelain fused to metal crowns. These patients were categorized into three groups based on gender, age, and education. Patients were assessed for aesthetic satisfaction for tooth shape; color, angulation, visibility, and shade at the time of insertion and at a follow-up of 12 weeks. At the time of the prosthesis insertion, a self-evaluation questionnaire was provided to each patient to record their satisfaction levels with the prosthesis. Satisfaction levels among the participants were evaluated based on participants' age, gender, and education level (Chi-square). A p-value of 0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: The study enrolled 150(41.67%) males and 210(58.33%) females with the participant age ranging from 19 to 60 years and a mean age of 30.53 (± 10.88 years). 84(23.3%) were uneducated participants, 210(58.3%) were high school graduates, and 66(18.3%) were university graduates. A decrease in the level of satisfaction was observed with increasing years of patient education at insertion. The overall aesthetic satisfaction among patients at PFM crown insertion (65%) and at 12 weeks follow-up (69.2%) was statistically comparable (p>0.05). Practical implication: Aesthetic is the most important consideration for the replacement of anterior teeth. Numerous studies evaluated the aesthetic satisfaction of the patients after providing full ceramic prosthesis, however, data regarding patient satisfaction after the metal ceramic dental prosthesisis scarce in the scientific literature. Conclusion: Satisfaction with the esthetic restoration depends on patient education and awareness. Age and education add to a person's experience and increase awareness with respect to better aesthetics.
