Impact of Traffic Sign on Pedestrians’ Walking Behavior

Abstract: To study the impact of traffic sign on pedestrian walking behavior, the paper applies cellular automaton to simulate one-way pedestrian flow. The channel is defined as a rectangle with one open entrance and two exits of equal width. Traffic sign showing that exit is placed with some distance in the middle front of the two exits. In the simulation, walking environment is set with various input density, width of exit, width and length of the channel, and distance of the traffic sign to exit. Simulation results i… Show more

“…In the T-shaped passage, Jia et al set the guide sign to reduce conflicts in the separating process of pedestrian flow [15]. Xiong et al analyzed the impact of traffic sign on pedestrian dynamics with questionnaire survey, and simulated one-way pedestrian flow with traffic sign in the passage [16]. Under the smoke condition, the effects of wall sign and ground sign are different [17].…”

“…At present, many studies have been made on pedestrian flow at different cases, for example, pedestrian flow simulation in bidirectional passage [2][3][4], pedestrians evacuation on stairs [5], pedestrian evacuation with panic [6], pedestrians evacuation in rooms with internal obstacles and multiple exits [7], and pedestrian flow analysis and simulation in T-shaped passage [8][9][10][11][12][13]. In T-shaped passage, Boltes et al [8] and Zhang et al [9] analyze the pedestrian flow dynamics with empirical data, respectively, and the pedestrian flow fundamental diagram is obtained.…”

“…For improving the efficiency of pedestrians passing, setting the guide sign is the usually used method. Xiong et al study the impact of traffic sign on pedestrian walking behavior, and the one-way pedestrian flow has been simulated based on cellular automata [13]. Song et al analyze the effects of direction sign in pedestrian evacuation process and build the pedestrian evacuation model [14].…”
