Impact of Transmission Power Control in multi-hop networks

Abstract: Many Transmission Power Control (TPC) algorithms have been proposed in the past, yet the conditions under which they are evaluated do not always reflect typical Internet-of-Things (IoT) scenarios. IoT networks consist of several source nodes transmitting data simultaneously, possibly along multiple hops. Link failures are highly frequent, causing the TPC algorithm to kick-in quite often. To this end, in this paper we study the impact that frequent TPC actions have across different layers. Our study shows how o… Show more

“…• Memory and processing power: Memory resources are an important factor for effective routing-node configuration in multi-hop IoT networks, as they play a vital role in storing routing tables and network topology information [84]. In dynamic IoT environments, sufficient memory allows for rapid adaptation to frequent network topology changes, ensuring efficient routing decisions [85]. Insufficient memory can lead to increased latency and packet loss, impacting performance [86].…”

“…In this scenario, there are devices with sufficient computational capabilities, such as vehicles and RSUs, as well as devices with constraints in processing and battery, such as the sensors. It often happens that the latter devices have not the capabilities in terms of processing or battery to correctly execute the processing needed for its involvement in the running applications, as it is the case of sensors that are inquired by too many services in parallel or are asked to provide historical data exceeding the local storage capacity [31]. Additionally, it may happen the requested service does not involve the acquisition of a sensing measure in real time as it is the case of the provisioning of old data.…”

“…The quality of radio links can be subject to fluctuations [3] and may exhibit characteristics that differ from the ones observed during pre-deployment testing [4]. Message exchanges have a great impact on energy consumption and network lifetime [5], therefore link failures can cause a significant increase in energy consumption [6]. Moreover, knowledge on the link quality can improve the routing inside a WSN [7].…”
