Impact of weight loss on plasma ghrelin level, clinical, and metabolic features of obese women with or without polycystic ovary syndrome

Abstract: Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common reproductive endocrine co-morbidity of obesity. Ghrelin is a peptide which regulates food intake and body weight. The aim of this study was to measure ghrelin levels in obesity and PCOS and to evaluate the impact of weight loss on plasma ghrelin level, metabolic, and phenotypic features of PCOS. This prospective comparative study enrolled obese women without PCOS (N = 60) and obese PCOS women (n = 50) and 85 control groups. Body compositions including fa… Show more

“…Karimi et al [ 7 ] and Heshmati et al [ 8 ] suggest that patients with polycystic ovary syndrome generally have insulin resistance and elevated serum insulin and abnormal lipoprotein metabolism. Studies have shown that overweight women with PCOS have a higher risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome [ 9 ]. Metformin is a biguanide insulin sensitizer [ 10 ].…”

“…In our study design, we have opted for the use of LSG specimens as a comparison group in order to investigate ghrelin expression based on the advantage of analyzing full-thickness gastric mucosa, being aware at the same time that this pathological state is considered to be unassociated with GISTs (2). In spite of plasma ghrelin levels being decreased in patients with obesity [66,67], the current body of knowledge reports similar levels of expression of GhrC in obese vs. non-obese control patients [68][69][70][71].…”

“…Karimy et al [7] and Heshmati et al [8] imply that insulin and serum metabolism and aberrant lipoprotein metabolism are typically present in people with polycystic ovarian syndrome. Studies showed that PCOS women are at a higher risk for type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, overweight pulmonary illness, cardiovascular illness and metabolic syndrome [9].…”
