Abstract:In a variety of neurons, action potentials (APs) initiate at the proximal axon, within a region called the axon initial segment (AIS) having favorable cable properties and a high density of voltage-gated ion channels. Pyramidal cells concentrate high-threshold sodium ion channels (NaV1.2) in the proximal AIS, and the distal AIS contains mostly lower threshold NaV1.6. It is widely believed that this separated NaV distribution favors backpropagation and lowers the AP threshold. We implemented a range of hypothet… Show more

scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
