Impacts of climate and forest management on suspended sediment source and transport in montane headwater catchments

Abstract: Suspended sediment transport in montane headwaters is important to water quality and nutrient balances. However, predictions of sediment source and transport can be difficult, in part, because of a changing climate and increasing frequencies of disturbances. We used observations from 10 headwater streams in water year (WY; starting on 1st October ending on 30th September) 2007-2009 and 2013-2018 to determine the potential impacts of climate and forest management on suspended sediment delivery. We analysed h… Show more

“…The occurrence of hysteresis due to nonlinear dynamics is a widespread phenomenon in hydrology. Hysteresis behaviour has been identified between discharge and various hydrological variables: soil moisture (SM; Penna et al, 2011; Radatz et al, 2013; Zuecco et al, 2016), storage (Davies & Beven, 2015), groundwater level (Allen et al, 2010; Fovet et al, 2015; Gelmini et al, 2022; Zuecco et al, 2016), hillslope flow (McGuire & McDonnell, 2010), stream water temperature (Blaen et al, 2013; Miralha et al, 2023), electrical conductivity (Zuecco et al, 2016), sediment (Aich et al, 2014; Burt et al, 2015; Yang et al, 2022) and solute concentration (House & Warwick, 1998; Peña et al, 2023).…”
