Impacts of COVID-19 on a Transitioning Energy System, Society, and International Cooperation

Abstract: Short term outcomes of the COVID-19 pandemic have included improved air quality and reduced carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gas emissions, while long term repercussions may include a disruption to joint international research efforts, the creation of silos, and the potential for internalizing efforts toward national rather than global goals. In this study, we identified the impacts of reduced mobility on pollutants and emissions, the emergence of nationalist approaches and effects on international co… Show more

“…However, this is unlikely to be the case for the people of lower income or deprived communities that have become more vulnerable [12] due to the socio-economic impacts of the pandemic. The more self-sustained development patterns are the ones that could eventually help the better redevelopment of the communities, such as the development of actions for energy access [54], community-focused institutions [84], better investments that include stronger polices [85], and advocating methods of transitioning energy systems [86]. As suggested by [87] "instability makes the ability to adopt and implement…policy options more".…”

“…During the last year of 2020, many studies were carried out regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. For instance, several studies have focused on the influences of COVID-19 outbreak on the urban activities, systems, processes, and health (e.g., Chapman & Tsuji, 2020 ; Fatmi, 2020 ; Feng et al, 2020 ; Girdhar et al, 2020 ). In the vice versa, some scholars have addressed the possible links between urban air pollution and illness outbreaks in the different regions and countries (e.g., Conticini et al, 2020 ; Magazzino et al, 2020 ; Ogen, 2020 ; Travaglio et al, 2020 ; Yongjian et al, 2020 ).…”

“…In this aspect, UNCCD advocated the adoption of land degradation neutrality (LDN) as a solution to stop further environmental degradation and concomitantly revitalize various ecosystem services and livelihood prospects. In additon, LDN was also intimately linked with the attainment SDG 15.3 target (Chapman and Tsuji 2020). Conversely, IAPs were considered to be a major challenge in achieving SDG targets, especially in the context of lands (Paulvon et al 2019) (Fig.…”

“…Furthermore, the environmentally sustainable land restoration strategies are an integral doctrine of United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration (UN-DER, 2021-2030) which was adapted and resolved in 73rd session of UN Assembly. Nonetheless, the COVID-19 pandemic further impeded the prospects of attaining the SDGs in the given time framework (Chapman and Tsuji 2020).…”
