Impacts of home lighting on human health

Abstract: Typical home lighting practice is mainly centred on visual aspects to enable safe movement between spaces, flexibility in multiuse spaces, a sense of aesthetics and energy efficiency. Whilst lighting impacts on the health of residents have not received similar consideration, this area is gaining increasing interest. This is even more important and actual in the context of the recent pandemic where people have been working or studying from home. A combination of bright daytime light and night-time darkness is e… Show more

“…In short, we must converge technological and biological evolution to preserve our health. The lighting industry must not only consider energy efficiency issues [ 21 ] but also lighting effects on human beings [ 22 , 23 ]. Lighting designed with the needs of people in mind takes both the visual and non-visual effects of light into account and is referred as human-centric lighting.…”

“…It is known that electromagnetic radiation of various ranges can have both negative and positive effects on a human organism, in particular, on the nervous and the cardiovascular systems, as well as on the immune and endocrine systems and other internal organs and functional systems [1][2][3][4][5][6] . The aim of this work is to study, using an Automated pulse diagnostic system (APDS), the quantitative effect of optical radiation of the two extreme colors of the optical range (red and blue) on the functional state of the human internal organs in order to continue developing technologies for managing human mental and physiological state 6,7 .…”

“…Thus, we propose an approach that employs a soft and alerting sunrise simulation, utilizes natural light if applicable, and appropriately lowers the bedroom temperature for awakening a sleeper tenderly and gradually to gain full alertness. This approach is inspired by the abovementioned scientific implications and the advice in [13][14][15] that lighting design in rooms and buildings has to take health issues into account. Moreover, this approach is proposed herein because it seems promising for achieving the design goal and improving one's wellbeing.…”
