Impacts of nitrogen and phosphorus starvation on the physiology of Chlamydomonas reinhardtii

Abstract: The importance of algae-derived biofuels has been highlighted by the current problems associated with fossil fuels. Considerable past research has shown that limiting nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus increases the cellular lipid content in microalgae. However, limiting the supply of nutrients results in decreased biomass, which in turn decreases the overall lipid productivity of cultures. Therefore, nutrient limitation has been a subject of dispute as to whether it will benefit biofuel production on a… Show more

“…who obtained a lipids content of 10–42% in this alga when it was cultivated on synthetic wastewater with different concentrations of glycerol. In algal cells, lipids accumulation was often triggered under cultivation conditions with limiting nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus . At the end of cultivation, nitrogen and phosphorus were deficient in the culture media, especially in the PC media (Fig.…”

“…This might be due to the wastewater sample being nitrogen deficient with respect to BBM. When the nitrogen is exhausted from medium culture, the cell nitrogen is used in enzymes and essential cellular structures and a portion of the carbon dioxide content is converted to lipid and carbohydrates, giving higher lipid yields (Kamalanathan et al 2016). Overall, the results suggest that the strains have the potential of producing higher lipid content in the wastewater treatment application if the process is optimized.…”

“…The same results have been reported by other researchers studying the effects of nitrogen depletion on biomass production and growth rates in C. reinhardtii. 16,17 Lipid production and productivity Moreover, the influences of different nitrogen levels on lipid production and productivity was also examined Figure 2 ), respectively. On the other words, nitrogen depletion, caused a noticeable decrease in the lipid productivity trends.…”
