Impacts of Parthenium hysterophorus L. on Plant Species Diversity in Ginir District, Southeastern Ethiopia

Abstract: Invasive alien species are considered the second greatest global threat to biodiversity. This study is aimed at determining the impacts of Parthenium hysterophorus on herbaceous and woody plant species diversity in the Ginir district, southeast Ethiopia. Data on vegetation were collected from the three study sites’ four land use types, with each land use type having invaded and non-invaded land units. A systematic random sampling method was used for establishing sampling plots. To examine the impacts of the in… Show more

“…In Ethiopia, the impact of P. hysterophorus on grazing land communities showed that the diversity and evenness of native plant species reduced as the density of P. hysterophorus increased, implying that the heterogeneity of the community was significantly affected [102]. A negative relationship between the density of P. hysterophorus and the species richness and abundance of native species was also recorded [13]. Several researchers have observed the dominance of Parthenium in grassland ecosystems.…”

“…Parthenium hysterophorus can easily outcompete native grasses, causing fodder shortages for livestock. Several studies have shown that high seed production in Parthenium enhances its spread and it replaces native plant species by creating homogenous stands [13,50]. The release of allelochemicals by this weed, which inhibits the germination and growth of various crops and native plant species, is essential for its invasion and survival in a wide range of native and non-native habitats, resulting in ecosystem change [101].…”

“…8 The study showed that parthenium weed populations reduced plant species abundance in the Ginir District of Ethiopia. 9 Different management options, such as manual, mechanical, cultural, chemical, and biological control, have been practiced to control parthenium weeds around the globe. However, it is difficult to control weeds using a single management strategy.…”
