Impacts of Spatial Patterns of Rural and Exurban Residential Development on Agricultural Trends in the Intermountain West

Abstract: In recent years, counties in the Intermountain West (Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and Utah) have experienced rapid population growth and housing development, and much of this growth is occurring outside of urban areas. Residential development often has negative impacts on farmlands, farm viability, and environmental services provided by working landscapes. We used county-level data to identify the association between the intensity and spatial patterns of residential settlement and trends in selected farm… Show more

“…These factors have contributed to more low-density residential growth in the surrounding developable lands of the rapidly expanding wildland-urban interface [27,28,53] and into grazing and farm lands of the West [68]. Moreover, agricultural landscapes of the West can be disproportionately impacted by exurban and rural residential development in areas where available wildlands are scarcer [69,70].…”

“…However, there are a few studies that apply LE concepts to larger areas. Ahmed and Jackson-Smith (2019) use LE tools (FRAGSTATS) to study the Intermountain West. In particular, they demonstrate how the spatial pattern of exurban development (identified using NLCD) improves statistical models explaining county-level agricultural trends.…”

“…However, regional socioeconomic and cultural changes, increased irrigation infrastructure costs, declining labor pools, and water scarcity concerns influence changing land use and irrigation practices. As floodplain parcels are fragmented or converted to nontraditional uses, coordination of irrigation water deliveries becomes increasingly more complex and erodes ranch efficiencies (Ahmed , Fernald et al , Sketch et al ). Additionally, infrastructure used to manage flood irrigation has been in place for many decades and plagued by aging conditions that are inefficient, labor‐intensive, costly to replace, and compromise farm productivity.…”
