Quality characteristics of the water can be influenced by many factors including environment, climate, management and manmade activities. These factors are responsible for the alteration of quality as well as quantity of water in every reservoir. Among those, climatic change is the key determinant of the sustainability of the ecosystems. Therefore, understanding the climatic change and its impact on Batticaloa Lagoon environment is important for its management in the future. In this view, the present study was conducted during the period from 2012 to 2014 with the aim of assessing the extent of community awareness and perception on climate change and its impacts on Batticaloa Lagoon environment, Sri Lanka. A survey was conducted with 406 respondents who are residing in nearby areas of the Lagoon. Data were analysed using SPSS software and MS Excel. Results revealed that, 81.4% of them heard about or clearly known about the climatic changes. In most cases, the awareness was gained through their own experience (74%) and via the media. Nearly 84% of the respondents mentioned that the lagoon water quality degradation linked with the climate changes. However, few of them (8%) reported that the human impacts are greater than the climatic impacts on water quality degradation in lagoon environment. Around 55.6% of the respondents expressed that the amount of rainfall for the last few years has been increased and finally it led to the flooding conditions. Continuous flooding (77%) in those areas was recognised as the problematic nature which led to the pollution of lagoon water as well as groundwater. Community response and expectations on the changing pattern of rainfall and impacts of climate change on economic activities were further evaluated in this study. The collected data and results therefore will be used to develop adaptation measures against climate change and for the formulation of the Batticaloa Lagoon management plan.

Women's involvement in fisheries seems to be largely invisible and unacknowledged in Jaffna Peninsula. Thus, the present study was conducted in Ponnalai village to determine the active participation of women in fisheries, analyse their socioeconomic status and suggest appropriate measures to improve their livelihood. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire and through interviews from October to December 2018. Randomly selected, 25 women fisher folks were interviewed and collected data were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. In the study area, women were primarily involved in hand picking of shrimps and crabs. Results revealed that 100 % of responders were Hindus and were from traditional fishing families. It was found that 72 % of women were above 50 years in age. The educational status of fishers showed that 80% were illiterate. The fisheries sector is characterized with the participation of married and widowed women (64 %). Number of children per women fisher folk was 7 -9 (52 %). The average monthly fish production varied between 130 kg to 312 kg (60 %) and monthly income varied from Rs.7, 800 to Rs.13, 000. It was apparent that the socio-economic status of women fishers in the study area was poor. Lack of government support, poor literacy rate and low income were the major identified constraints faced by the women fisher folk of this village. Therefore, support from governmental or non-governmental organizations by providing subsidies, loans and technological assistance are essential to improve the livelihood and their socio-economic status.

Recreational water quality assessment is an important step to overcoming safety issues for the users and the conservation of the habitat. The present study was conducted for five months from December 2020 to April 2021 to identify the ongoing issues related to the recreational water quality in Charty Beach, Jaffna, Sri Lanka. The water temperature (29.24 ℃), pH (8.18), turbidity (8 NTU), and DO (6.71 mg L-1) were all under the marine recreational standards' threshold limits. The total coliform (4.85 MPN 100 mL-1) and E. coli count (2.64 MPN 100 mL-1) were both confirmed to be within the international recreational water quality standards. However, measured nitrate (2.66 mg L-1) and phosphate (0.15 mg L-1) levels in the water were found to exceed the threshold limits for marine recreational waters, indicating that the beach has been contaminated with nitrate and phosphate-containing sewage overflow. The higher microbiological indicator values and nitrate content were obtained during the study period in December, which is the year’s rainy season. Surface runoff containing feces, and agricultural waste due to rain may be the cause of the highest values. Based on the overall results of the beach water, it can be deemed that Charty Beach is suitable for bathing and recreational activities.
