Impaired Carotid Viscoelastic Properties in Women With Polycystic Ovaries

Abstract: Background-The purpose of this study was to assess the elastic properties of the carotid arteries in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome, asymptomatic women with polycystic ovaries, and healthy controls. Methods and Results-We recruited the following 60 subjects: 20 symptomatic women with polycystic ovaries attending the reproductive endocrinology clinics, 20 asymptomatic women with polycystic ovaries attending the family planning clinic, and 20 staff volunteers as healthy controls with normal ovaries on tr… Show more

“…Loss of this hyperemic flow component of the GTN response may explain the impairment observed in the PCOS group; however, a smooth muscle abnormality in the conduit arteries of these women cannot be excluded. Increased stiffness in the carotid and brachial arteries in PCOS patients in comparison with control women has been previously reported (39,40).…”

“…L'iperandrogenismo nelle donne con PCOS può risultare come un quadro di lipoproteine nei maschi, suggerendo un potenziale aterogenico aumentato in pazienti con PCOS [49]. Inoltre molti Autori [60] hanno evidenziato una compromissione delle proprietà visco-elastiche della carotide, fornendo una ulteriore prova di disfunzione vascolare nelle donne con questa sindrome.…”

“…Even at young age, women with PCOS carry a number of independent risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) such as obesity [13,[76][77][78], changes in lipid profile [9][10][11], decreased fibrinolytic capacity [14,15], increased inflammatory markers [79][80][81] and, a labile control of blood pressure [82]. In addition, women with PCOS display signs of endothelial dysfunction, which is an early event in the development of atherosclerosis that precedes plaque formation and clinical disease.…”

“…Possible health risks include cardiovascular disease (CVD) [12] and associated risk factors [13][14][15]. However, whether all women with PCOS carry a similar increased risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease remains unknown.…”
