Impaired fasting glucose and the metabolic profile in Danish children and adolescents with normal weight, overweight, or obesity

Abstract: The prevalence of IFG, when applying the ADA criterion compared with the WHO criterion, was 4 times higher in individuals with overweight and obesity and 14 times higher in individuals with normal weight in this study sample of children and adolescents. IFG was associated with a higher risk of hypertension and dyslipidemia compared with their normoglycemic peers regardless of the definition applied.

“…On the other hand, adiposity (measured by BMI‐for‐age and waist‐to‐hip ratio) showed strong independent association with prediabetes. This association has been demonstrated throughout previous scientific reports; hence, further highlighting the criticalness of adiposity in the development of prediabetes and subsequent progression to T2DM.…”

“…Among children and adolescents, family history of diabetes, representing inherited genetic susceptibility and shared predisposing environment, and adiposity, inducing insulin resistance, are major risk factors for prediabetes and T2DM development. [15][16][17][18] To this end, in Kuwait, it has been estimated that overweight and obesity affect 21.6% and 30.5% of children aged 6 to 18 years, respectively. 19 On the other hand, the prevalence of diabetes in Kuwait has been estimated to be 23.1% among adults, placing Kuwait among the top 10 highest prevalence countries worldwide.…”

“…25,27 Obesity is associated with several comorbidities in adolescents and young adults. 28,29 In our series, all of our patients with T2D had complete resolution without medications and one out of two for hypertension, similar to the outcomes reported by others. 10,30,31 One patient with obstructive sleep apnea improved symptomatically after SG; however, he did not undergo objective assessment.…”

“…Alterations in glucose metabolism are important in the development of metabolic and cardiovascular disease and may occur already in childhood. With the presence of childhood obesity, these alterations become increasingly common . Although the prevalence of type 2 diabetes in children and adolescents is less than 1%, the prevalence is estimated to quadruple by 2050, mainly driven by the rising obesity rates while prediabetes is already common …”
