“…Similar to our result, two studies found that another herpesvirus, HSV (Herpes Simplex Virus), is related to cognitive (executive) deficits and gray matter decreases in patients with schizophrenia but not in controls (Prasad et al, 2010;Prasad et al, 2012b;Schretlen et al, 2010). HSV-1 is also associated with cognitive deficits in patients with BD but not (or at a far lesser extent) in HC (Aiello et al, 2006;Dickerson et al, 2004;Dickerson et al, 2006b;Gerber et al, 2012). Therefore, some authors have proposed that patients with schizophrenia and patients with BD displayean increased brain susceptibility/liability to exogenous assaults (Schretlen et al, 2010).…”

“…Our findings could mean that the association between antibodies and cognitive functioning is not a state effect, but that the presence of antibodies has longer-lasting effects on cognitive functioning. We used different tasks to test the cognitive domains that were found to be associated with HSV1 in previous studies [5], [7]. The fact that we found an association in the same cognitive domain as in previous research with a different task makes the finding more robust.…”

“…A recent review summarized several studies that found that HSV1 antibodies were associated with impaired immediate memory and executive functioning in patients with schizophrenia [5]. This association was also found in patients with bipolar disorder [6], [7]. Antibodies to cytomegalovirus (CMV) were found to be associated with impaired visual search and memory function in patients with schizophrenia [8].…”

“…Other pathogens previously associated with BPD include influenza type-A, where prenatal exposure leads to a fourfold increase in the risk of developing BPD ( Parboosing et al, 2013 ). Serological detection of HSV-1 antibodies in BPD has been associated with more severe cognitive impairments in BPD patients ( Gerber et al, 2012 ). A study assessing CSF samples for antibodies for neurotropic agents found an increase in antibody production in BPD, but no specific pathogen was common amongst the cases; antibodies to HHV-6A/B were not measured ( Stich et al, 2015 ).…”
