Impedance analysis of film-forming amines for the corrosion protection of a carbon steel

Abstract: Octadecylamine (ODA) is a well-known organic inhibitor for the corrosion protection of carbon steels. In the present study, electrochemical impedance data analysis was performed to extract physical parameters of the ODA thin film that formed on a P275 carbon steel surface. First, surface observations and contact angle measurements showed the steel surface modification after the ODA treatment linked to the adsorption of an organic hydrophobic thin film. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the presence of… Show more

“…In the corrected complex capacitance plane, the capacitance value of the oxide layer is the intersect point on the real axis at high frequency (Figure 9 shows an example). Once the accurate capacitance of the oxide layer is known, the thickness can be calculated by the following formula [23]:…”

“…The resistivity of the oxide film/metal surface interface, ' , is calculated from the characteristic frequency f0, which is the frequency at the maximum imaginary part of the impedance or the frequency at 45° phase shift. Further details of this calculation can be found elsewhere [23], [29].…”

“…In an aggressive acidic solution, carbon steel will be destroyed, which leads to significant economic losses [1,2]. Many techniques, such as the cathodic protection method and electroplates, coating processes, have been applied to protect metal bases from corrosion [3,4,5]. Among all of these techniques, the inhibitors is one of the most useful ways [6,7,8,9,10,11,12].…”

“…For example, Wu et al employed π-π interactions by combining polypyrrole and graphene to obtain an excellent dispersive solution of graphene [24]. Additionally, the corrosion rate of the metal substrate was effectively reduced by coating it with the hybrid composite [25]. Chen et al used interactions between MoS 2 and graphene to decrease the agglomeration of graphene in the solution and discovered that the defensive ability of the prepared coating was enhanced due to excellent dispersion [26].…”
