Impedimetric evaluation of the efficiency of disinfectants against biofilms

Abstract: An impedimetric evaluation of disinfectant efficacy has shown that biofilms of Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella enteritidis and Listeria mono‐cytogenes attached to polyvinyl chloride (PVC), Teflon, Plexiglass, wood, rubber and stainless steel are more resistant than the same bacteria in suspension. Based on the activity against the test‐organisms after 1, 3 and 5 min with exposures to 0.5, 1 and 2% of each disinfectant, the resistance towards disinfection was related to the type of hard‐surf… Show more

“…Stainless steel surfaces are favourable to the formation of biofilm for Salmonella A particular difficulty with stainless steel, however, is that its surface can feature crevices and zones of corrosion, which can prevent an effective cell count. But more troubling is that these surface crevices can make it difficult to remove biofilms (Holah et al 1990;Dhaliwal et al 1992;Flint et al 1996).…”

“…Some researchers have calculated the number of cells on stainless steel surfaces by relating the TTD to the equivalent number of cells, indicated by a standard calibration curve prepared from serial dilutions of planktonic cells [37,38]. Other studies of surface-inhabiting bacteria have also used calibration curves constructed from planktonic cell suspensions [39][40][41].…”
