Implant site development requirements in an advanced dental education program: A series of 290 implants

Abstract: Our purpose was to assess the frequency and impact of various site development procedures provided before, during, and after implant placement in an advanced dental education program. Methods:We evaluated all implant cases completed by two residents in each of three consecutive periodontics residency classes. Dependent variables included implant failure, complication occurrence, presence of radiographic bone loss, and need for tissue augmentation. We analyzed these outcomes against a panel of explanatory covar… Show more

“…In such cases, clinicians have considerable flexibil-ity in selection of devices, materials, and techniques. A surgeon may or may not choose a specialized flap design, 36,37 an adjunct for space provision, 38,39 a nonabsorbable (NM) (Figures 6-8) or absorbable membrane (AM) (Figures 9-12), 6,15,17 and an autogenous graft or a bone derivative (allogeneic or xenogeneic). 15,17,34,35 Operator preference and an appraisal of patient-and site-specific factors may determine the GBR technique and materials selected.…”

“…Such defects arise through various etiologies including periodontitis, pulpal disease, cysts and tumors, trauma, tooth agenesis, and tooth loss 1–3 . In perspective, over half of implant sites may require some form of bone augmentation, alveolar ridge augmentation (ARA) representing the predominant treatment need 4–6 . Alveolar ridge deficiency (ARD) is clinically relevant even when implants are not included in the treatment plan.…”
