Implant Surgery: The Management of Soft Tissues

Abstract: Soft tissue healing plays a significant role in determining the outcome of implant and other osseous surgery. A variety of methods is required to accomplish primary soft tissue closure. These include the techniques of undermining; free grafting, both full and split thickness; and pedicle grafting. Preprosthetic surgery, which includes the correction of high muscle attachments and vestibular deficiencies, involves the use of broad spectrum grafting modalities in order to create an appropriate environment for th… Show more

“…In such cases, the mental foramen was found in the surface of alveolar bone and directly under the gums [77-79]. To avoid direct injury with scalpel, the initial incision should be made more lingually and a full-thickness flap is elevated until the mental foramen is identified [80]. In addition, flap reflection or retraction, suturing, soft tissue swelling and pressure on the mental nerve area can also cause injury to that nerve, resulting in altered sensation after surgery [6,9,34,81,82].…”

“…As a result of soft tissue thickening the translucency of restorative materials or discoloured devital teeth and the occurrence of recessions are reduced [16]. Soft tissue augmentation procedures are usually performed by harvesting either autologous free gingival [19] or connective tissue grafts [20].…”
