Implementation, Adoption, and Perceptions of Telemental Health During the COVID-19 Pandemic: Systematic Review (Preprint)

Abstract: BACKGROUND Early in 2020, mental health services had to rapidly shift from face-to-face models of care to delivering the majority of treatments remotely (by video or phone call or occasionally messaging) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “…Some psychologists continued to hold perceptions that telepsychology diminished the quality and/or effectiveness of care and had concerns about its negative impact on the therapeutic alliance (Watson et al, 2023). Conversely, the increased use of telepsychology during the COVID-19 pandemic was facilitated by the rapid development and implementation of organizational infrastructure (e.g., telepsychology platforms, telehealth coordinators) and training for telepsychology use, in addition to the relaxation of legal policies and billing reimbursements, that occurred in response to "stay at home" orders (Appleton et al, 2021).…”

“…Consequently, the effectiveness of various therapeutic modalities, including family therapies, has not yet been adequately established, and the supply of telehealth-ready clinicians cannot meet the growing demand (Smith et al, 2020). At the height of COVID-19, however, most child and family mental health services pivoted to virtual service delivery (Appleton et al, 2021;Racine et al, 2020) and intend to maintain their virtual practice postpandemic (McKee et al, 2022). The present study aims to address this gap in the context of student-led virtually delivered emotion-focused family therapy (EFFT; Foroughe, 2018;Lafrance et al, 2020).…”

“…12 Finally, telemental health is defined as the delivery of strictly mental health care services using ICTs such as video conferencing telephone, email or text messaging. 13 Medication adherence is defined as "the extent to which the patient's action matches the agreed recommendations", i.e., the recommendations by the health care provider. 14 Intentional nonadherence is a lack of willingness from patients to take their medication, arising from personal preferences and attitudes, while nonintentional nonadherence is due to medication barriers such as difficulties in accessing treatment or failing to take ownership due to age or cognitive impairments.…”
