Implementation of a Cross-specialty Training Program in Basic Laparoscopy

Abstract: Background and Objectives:Several surgical specialties use laparoscopy and share many of the same techniques and challenges, such as entry approaches, equipment, and complications. However, most basic training programs focus on a single specialty. The objective of this study was to describe the implementation of a regional cross-specialty training program for basic laparoscopy, to increase the flexibility of educational courses, and to provide a more efficient use of simulation equipment. Methods:Using a region… Show more

“…In the same study, the authors emphasize that residents from more than one surgical specialty might train in the same laboratory. However, a cross-specialty training program is also feasible and has proved validity[33-35]. Benefits of this arrangement for a training program comprise more frequent disposal of courses and a more effective use of training resources.…”

“…An effective training program that keeps residents motivated requires relevant curriculum content, personnel, and resources for optimal flexible training strategies. [17] Lectures on laparoscopic surgeries are given during revision courses in surgery. We suggest that a dedicated short-term hands-on training of residents as currently done in basic surgical skills should be incorporated into the training curriculum of residents to further enhance their understanding of the core concepts of laparoscopy.…”

“…These include entry approaches, lack of depth perception with 2D image and instruments with limited mobility (except in robotic operations) (24). Although laparoscopic adrenalectomies are uncommon, cross-specialty program can be implemented by training with the more common types of other laparoscopic procedures (25). Robotic adrenalectomy is performed in some institutions, but the benefit is small and the cost is high (26,27).…”
