SummaryIn the current age, wireless sensor networks (WSN) are growing the attention of researchers. WSNs are significantly used in a broad scope of real‐time monitoring applications. With ongoing advances and requirements in industrial emerging time‐critical applications, WSNs have been accordingly stretched out to help the reliable, time‐bound data delivery. In WSNs, node organization, resource limitations, topology varieties, providing delay guarantees for channel access, and transmission time barrier are the most significant challenges in real‐time handling traffic. Suppose critical data packets arrive from sensor nodes simultaneously. In that case, finding the optimal path for the transmission of data packets so that data are reached within time bounds, taking into account the current network scenario, is a more inspiring task. With this perspective, in order to provide a priority‐based transmission scheme, an improved adaptive media access control (MAC) protocol is proposed to support priority‐based channel access considering the current network scenario, which ensures time‐bounded reliable transfer of critical data packets. The proposed system uses an adaptive learning‐centered approach to find the optimum path for sending critical data packets in varying network scenarios. The proposed mission‐critical MAC (MC‐MAC) protocol is assessed arithmetically to offer reliable and time‐bounded transmission for emergency data packets.

The need for long term operation of large scale Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) has posed serious issues on energy efficiency due to the limited energy capacity of sensor nodes. Numerous schemes employed in literature have shown that the problem of effective energy management is as a result of inappropriate cluster sizes, energy consumed during data transmission by the nodes' power amplifiers, and the energy consumed at the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer of nodes for data reception. The investigation of the effect of Transmission Power Control (TPC) on the MAC layer of a self-organized cluster of wireless sensor nodes using typical CC2420 transceiver parameters, IEEE 802.15.4 standard compliant, is presented in this study. The proposed approach offers a new and more efficient method of evaluating the effect of TPC in a self-organized clustering network at the MAC layer. The network's lifetime simulation results using MATLAB R2013b, were compared when the unwanted signal received at the MAC layer of sensor nodes was considered and when not considered. The results obtained showed a 14.62% decrease in energy consumption of the network nodes, without considering the unwanted signal received at the MAC layer of the nodes.

A wireless sensor network is a collection of sensor nodes that communicate with one another to gather data and send it to a base station. The quality of service provided by sensor networks determines their efficiency and lifetime. Energy, channel capacity, packet transmission, packet drop, and latency are all factors in QoS. In WSNs, routing protocols are designed to discover the shortest route to a network's destination, whereas MAC protocols are designed to transmit data through a communication channel. To increase the network's life span, the best routing and MAC protocols are required for communication. In this research, we examined the performance of different MAC protocols for a variety of QoS measures as node density increased. Future researchers will benefit from this research in establishing the best hybrid protocols for wireless sensor networks. The results demonstrate that CSMA is the best communication protocol among the others.
